You would probably be ok without one but an amp will make even the factory speakers sound much better.
I'm pretty happy with the JL 6 channel amp. I have 4 channels bridged for the fronts and the rears on the other two. I originally bought it when I thought I needed all of those channels for the mids, highs, and center separately. a 4 channel would be fine.

and where is the amp located in the TL? is it in the trunk?

There is a post with the amp location.
You don't need an for the same exact speakers; if unique instructions or advice were needed for every possible combination of speakers / amps there would be billions if not trillions of items out there. Check the impedence, power, and frequency response of your speakers and look for a suitable amp.

Just like I hate cars said, there will always be a difference between going amped and ampless on the same speaker. You will get a lot more volume if you amp them. If you're not out there for competition or really loud music that can be heard 2 blocks away, then I really wouldn't worry about putting an amp on them.

Sound quality is definately improved wtih the amp and obviously volume too. I did not see how SQ could improve with an amp but I was told it would and it made a huge difference. I would venture to say the amp makes as big of a difference as aftermarket speakers.
If I had it to do over again and could only do one item at a time, I would do an amp first because you get some SQ improvement and a lot more loudness. If you blow the stock speakers you can upgrade then. I've been running the stock rear speakers amped at 3x their rated power for a couple years and they're fine.

OK...
There's really no need to amp coax speakers but it will definitely help if you did. Also, did you say that your installing these in the rear? Don't worry about the rear speakers or amping them...work on your front soundstage b/c that's what you'll mainly hear. When your at a concert...are you listening to the band while your turned around? No. Unless you want a sorta surround thing going then don't worry about your rears. If you have the money and are serious about wanting to get better SQ, buy a set of 6.5" components and a good 2 or 4 channel amp and be done with it. It will sound MUCH MUCH better than any coax's
Like I always do, I'll start by asking....
1. What's your budget?
2. What do you listen to?

For me I was completely new to amping the mids and didn't believe how much of a difference it would make. I finally listened to the advice on here and it made me wish I would've done it years sooner. Before the TL I always had aftermarket decks which were "ok" power wise.

Yeah sticking an amp on them makes a world of difference! You can get away with not doing it on coax's but with components...you pretty much have to!

No amp needed to push those. Amp will sound better at higher volume but you also run the risk of the high pitch noise if amp isn't installed right. I personally would go no amp. Heck, the factory mids/high speakers are awesome to me. Only sound mod I can see is a Subwoofer.

post pics of your car. I noticed several times you've posted so many questions pertaining to basicaly the same questions most of which you can find anwers to them very quickly. In fact it's right on top of the main page https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-audio-bluetooth-electronics-navigation-94/3g-tl-audio-electronics-faq-605299/ some of your questions seemingly shady to where you ask questions as if you don't even have the car yet. But again i'll help you. As majority says you don't need an amp for those speaker. Personaly I would run an amp. Why? because majority of amps out there especially the oem are always over rated. For example I've tested so many different after head units out there claiming that they have an output of 40watts per channel and so on... Various test and many different head units with big names such as clarion and alpine and so on... Guess what? Most of them don't even come close to the claimed wattage. So again. That oem amp that our cars (if you own one) does not put out as much as many would think. Simple answer. No you dont' need an amp to run those speaker. Another simple answer. You want it to sound good, then answer changes to Yes you need an amp. Now show us your car.
