DIY: Valentine 1 Hardwire, remote display + Extra Mute button install
I just got my new 05 SSM/Ebony Navi TL, and one of the first things to do was to hardwire the V1. Even though numerous threads have been written regarding the actual hardwiring of V1, I wasn’t able to find much regarding the remote display, so I decide to do my own installation.
I used to have the remote display glued to the underside of my dash on my CL Type S (right above the “right” turn signal indicator), but the dash construction of the TL prevents me from doing that again. I also don’t like to mount the remote display on the steering column, as it would partially block my view to the dash.
This is what I came up with:

But having the remote display that far up the dash would make it very hard to hit the mute button… So I decided to make an extra mute button, and mount it on the dead switch to the right of the side mirror controls.
Tools Required:
Some long wires
Momentary push button switch from radio shack: Cat # 275-644
Soldering Iron
Drill, and ½ inch drill bit (size depends on your push button)
wire connectors (not sure the exact name) from radio shack
- Open up the V1 remote display and remove the rubber push button.
- Follow the circuits under the button you just removed, you’ll see 2 tiny holes on the circuit board. Solder 2 wires into those holes.

- Put the remote back together. I tied a small knot, incase someone yanks on the wires.

- Back view after the remote display is put back together

I twisted the wires together, so that it is easier to manage. A quick trick I learned was to put the wires into a drill, and just go to town with it.
![](http://www.oilfighter.com/tl/P1010044.JPG)
- Solder the wires to the two contacts on the switch
![](http://www.oilfighter.com/tl/P1010049.JPG)
- It’s a good idea to put these connectors in. It will make it a lot easier during the installation.
![](http://www.oilfighter.com/tl/P1010050.JPG)
- Pull the lower dash out, and pop out the dead button
![](http://www.oilfighter.com/tl/P1010060.JPG)
![](http://www.oilfighter.com/tl/P1010054.JPG)
- Drill a hole into the center of the button, and then put your mute button in
![](http://www.oilfighter.com/tl/P1010057.JPG)
![](http://www.oilfighter.com/tl/P1010056.JPG)
- Do the hardwiring of your V1. I used info from other threads, but here are a few quick shots.

![](http://www.oilfighter.com/tl/p1010066.JPG)
- Connect the mute button circuit
![](http://www.oilfighter.com/tl/P1010064.JPG)
-Pop the button back into the dash, and install all the trim pieces.

That’s it! Now you can glance at the remote without taking your eyes off the road, yet still have the mute button within your reach. I hardwired into the Rear Right window, I can also turn the V1 off by hitting the window lock button, pretty neat.

Not a Blowhole
Nice - I used the same switched outlook from the fuse block - I did not feel the need to re-locate the Mute button, but your solution is very neat - points awarded.

Great thread, Oil Fighter. Points to you.
Now I'll move this to BT/Navi with the other radar detector threads, where it will certainly add to the wealth of knowledge already there.

Don't see how it would be a problem, my detector is mounted high up on the windshield, and both forward and backward antennas are unobstructed.

Great post and timely. I just received my V1 and remote display. My car won't be in until 11/3, but this will be the first mod I do.
I apreciate all your pics and explanation.
Forgive my ignorance, but how do I give you credit?
Thanks,
David
