Disc Read Error Troubleshooting

2007 TL -- Orange 2009 disc

I have the "Please check your disc" error message displayed on my nav screen. Prior to this posting, I would occasionally have issues with nav system taking a long time to boot. It's been failed for several weeks. Sometimes I get a "downloading" message, but eventually it fail and the "Please check your disc" message comes up. I've owned the car for 3 years.

I read through the posts about diagnosing/repairing this issue, and have accomplished the following steps:
1) Removed and cleaned disc
2) Removed DVD player, cleaned laser
3) Placed DVD disc in desktop computer, and disc is readable
I have not disconnected my battery as I don't want to lose my radio presets.

As I understand, I'm now looking at the following options
1) Ship DVD drive to Alpine for repair
2) Junkyard DVD drive and hope it works
3) Alibaba the drive mechanism and replace the OEM drive mechanism

Any further troubleshooting or solutions I should pursue?

I appreciate all the folks that have posted up troubleshooting & solutions in the various threads over the years here.

Well there's your problem.. the 2007 TL disc is white, not orange.

I think it sounds as if it has been working with the disc. I did not see anywhere where OP indicates he has replaced the disc?
$358 at Alpine. Money well spent they have fixed mine twice now under the original repair and you get a new disc. I need to use old disc to maintain nav hacks so I did not use the new disc.

Sorry for not being clear--yes, it was working with the orange disc. I owned the car for ~3 years, with it working fine, and never knew what color disc was in there.

Yeah, but there is something suspect there.. Was the DVD replaced in the past with an 06 one perhaps? From factory, it should have been a white disc. Previous owner did something funky.

2006 TL DVD drive: 39540-SEP-406

2007-2008 DVD Drive: 39546-SEP-A51

Can you take your DVD drive out and confirm the part number?

Yeah that's an 05-06 Drive, explains why it has an orange disc then.. Just to make sure we're not overlooking the obvious but you're sure this is an 2007 and not a 2006 TL?

alright, glad we cleared that up Sorry for the minor wild good chase! In this case @pohljm 's advice is still valid but i think it's still a tough pill to swallow since the newest disc is 2014 for orange. I'd personally take a gamble at the junkyard and if that didn't work, just continue using Waze on my phone.

Thanks. I don't ever use the nav function; I just miss the screen working for radio type stuff. It hurts to spend a few hundred bucks on a junkyard or alpine repair when I don't really use it very much. Thanks for the help.

Hopefully the junkyard would cost less than $100, but if you don't use it for its main purpose, the money would be better spent elsewhere!!

I have the same issue. It hasn't worked for years. Its a Pain in the As* to fix it so I just got a cell phone mount to cover the navi screen. Wish there was an easier/ cheaper solution.

Thanks. I'm leaning toward your technique. My clock will be accurate except for DST, my radio presets are fixed, and I can't change the bass/treble.

If I don't like this, pony up $300 :-)

go to ebay and buy a 07-08 drive and do the upgrade! Clock fixed, better graphics and it'll be able to get newer maps for a few more years.

just have Alpine fix the drive. then your set and you can maintain navi hacks that you cannot with the 07-08.
