Couple of questions for the tablet mod.

I have an 06 base, non-navi. I already have iSimple installed. It has an aux, iphone port, and microUSB.

1. Is Nexus 7 still the go to tablet?
2. I'm not focused on actual navigation too much but it is possible to pair with my iphone and use the iphone for the internet data and the tablet to display the navigation? What about playing songs? Will they display on the tablet?
3. How do you get songs onto it in the future?
4. Is it possible to use the navigation frame from navi TLs + the tablet in an 06 base as well as the screen above the air vents (for climate control display) or do I have to move my non navi display screen down below like some users have?
5. Lastly, anyone selling any premade screens?

Thanks all.

you can use ANY tablet you so desire or can afford that fits...6-8inches...
each tablet has its own challenges that you need to figure out how to install.
you could use an Ipad if you chose to do so.
yes, you can "tether" by using your phones data hot spot
if you're tethering, this means you're piggy backing your phones data and can stream GPS, music, videos, etc. on to tablet...no need to "move songs over to tablet"
yes, you would have to use the "navi frame" to make a clean install. otherwise, you would have a "floating" tablet....

You have to move your climate display down.

You can't just buy the navi-sub display and have it work on your non-navi.

There's no need to buy the navigation bezel with the buttons along the bottom unless you want to hardwire it to control the tablet.

So which tablet is most popular with least amount of challenges? Nexus 7?

And the tablet would work through iSimple and I can tether to the tablet with my iphone or ipod?

And the navi bezel and navi climate control won't work so I have to drop the non navi climate control down low?

gp16 is right, since you're non-navi.

also, only the navi ppl have trouble with tablets...because of the space constraints...so this is why we choose to go with the 2012 nexus 7. the 2012 nexus 7 you can take apart and relocate charging port and head phone jack.... because there is no space to work with.

with non-navi, I assume you have much larger space behind the tablet to play with and with this assumption, im assuming you can choose to go with any tablet that fits

There is a lot of great information here in this thread:

https://acurazine.com/forums/audio-b...ctures-911259/

The non-navi will most likely have more room to play with since the buttons at the bottom aren't there. Depending on the tablet size the bottom may run into that button. As mentioned, that is why most have used a 7" tablet.

Others have used Ipad minis but then other modifications most likely will be needed to the bezel to allow for the extra width of the ipad (or android tablet of similar screen ratio).

The perfect scenario if doable, is an 8" tablet as that would fit the OEM screen space exactly. However, the tablet case's width will not fit well. This again is why the 7" tablets have worked best.

Ipad mini's could fit back there but very tight. You have about 200mm at best (width) to work with I think. Need thought to find way to get charging (usb if android) cable on side of tablet and out to be able to run it and connect to audio interface (example: Isimple) if playing music through car speakers that way.

Here is a great site to help find dimensions of tablets:

That's pretty sweet! I was about to reply to ask where you put the buttons, then saw them in the pic.

Great answers from justnspace, guitarplayer16, QuickTL07, and dmacroch. Just to clarify, Nexus 7 2012 is probably the easiest tablet to use because you can relocated the micro-USB input. The space constraint on these tablets is where the Nexus 7 micro-USB plug is, which overlaps with the location of the TL's A/C buttons (see pictures below, from my install). So there is no difference in relevant space on the sides between the Navi and non-Navi cars. The extra space at the bottom of non-Navi isn't really helpful...

Tethering - yes, I tether my Nexus 7 to my iPhone using MyWi. MyWi uses a little more battery than I would like, but it's not horrible. Navigation doesn't use very much data, streaming Pandora is about 60 MB/hour.

Non-Navi A/C buttons will function fine, but it's the display that you lose. Many people relocate the display to the pockets below the stereo. Other people just use the A/C buttons without the display. One guy uses voice commands, but I never figured out how to do that. I have a Navi-TL which show the climate control display in the same screen as the clock.

Okay I decided to go iSimple + iPad Mini. I didn't need extra Nexus options like back up cam simply because I won't use it and my preexisting iSimple install makes it easier and allows me to control music/playlists from steering wheel.

I've researched this option pretty well now. My main questions:

1. When you yank HVAC from the frame with the buttons, how do you extend the wires to reach the HVAC in the lower 2 pockets now? Gotta solder the wires right? How easy/difficult is this? I've never done anything like it. What can I expect and how can I mess it up? What materials do I need?

2. I feel like buying 07-08 non navi screen for $50 (on ebay right now) saves me a lot of time of sanding and cutting my current non navi screen and will give me extra room for the iPad. Is the space really that big behind it or is it because of the two black pieces serving as the screen when it's actually the same size as navi??
