I was wondering if anyone had and opinion on this subject.

My car has a CEL and I want to know what it is obviously and it wouldn't hurt to have one laying around for other times.

I was thinking of getting a cheap little one from amazon because as long as it reads the code its just as good as the next one(?) and I can just use the internet to go from there.

Any recommendations or am I pretty much right

 

find a used one or take it to your local auto parts store - they scan for free, and nothing is cheaper than free. if used just get a cheap actron one.
