Bought a GPS yesterday : Magellan Maestro 4250

Got it for $249.99 at my local Best Buy, when they accepted to match the price found at Costco.com and www.onsale.com

http://www.onsale.com/shop/detail.as...d=BWBPRICEGRAB

This is a heck of a deal and I couldn't pass. Now I need to find a way to hardwire it to my 2005 TL. I don't want to see wires dangling in front of my eyes.

Anybody has done it? I could use clear instructions and pictures of the installation.

Thanks

i havent seen any instructions exactly like this, there was someone who installed a TomTom on the ledge right in front of the clock. they removed the clock and ran the wires through that opening and then ran them to one of the 12v outlets. i did a similar install with my TomTom but i didnt remove the clock. i just ran them on the passenger side and hid them under the "dash" and along under the plastic and then to my armrest area and plugged it in the 12v. i had to get a 10' extension but it works pretty well and it can be fully hidden if and when i remove the GPS. there may be some pics out there but you will have to search. if i can find that link i will post later.

I have no idea how to do that install cleanly, and would have referred you to the same thread. What I want to know is, is that 4250 any good because I saw that sale at Costco and wanted to get it for someone. Take it for a spin and let me know ok (before the sale ends though).

My first impression is very positive but I only used it 1hr this morning. There are tons of reviews of it on the web, in several GPS Forums and besides poor Customer Service, nobody really complains about it.

I'd say for that price, it's a hell of a deal. It has stuff I don't care for, such as Bluetooth, cause I won't use the GPS to receive calls anyway. I have a Treo 755p for that, coupled with my HFL. I'll use it strictly for navigation and for that, it is as good as the top of the line Garmins.

If it was the same price, I woulda bought Garmin (750 or 760) which have more accessories and better Customer Service. But they're certainly not worth $200 more. Just my opinion.

Good deal. I'm surprised Best Buy matched prices.
I got a GPS the week before Black Friday.... Best electronic device I've ever purchased. Enjoy.

I have heard mixed reviews on the 4250 I heard that it some times freezes on people. Did you get the PRP? To hardwire it into the system, get the 6.99 extender cut it at the socket end strip the wires, the white is the positive and the red is the negative and tap it into the positive and negative wires.

I was looking at the same few models too and picked up a 750 on Amazon (brand new) for a couple bucks over 350. So far I like it but, haven't driven too far since I have gotten it. Out of the box I think the 4250 has more features but, I too read many complaints on customer service. I did try a few of the Magelins at the local CC and just liked the Garmin more.

The 750 does NOT have bluetooth. Also does NOT have traffic out of the box but, is an addon. You can get the MSN or FM receiver for it. I will end up with one of them soon I am sure.

If anyone has installed the 750 where it looks nice please send me the link. Not sure how I want to mount it yet.

Most electronic gizmos freeze from time to time. Mine didn't do it yet. It's a new model with new software so I'm sure there will be a firmware upgrade sometime this year or next year.
Heck, Windows XP Pro does that too, especially when Outlook is running. No big deal on a GPS, it reboots in a couple of seconds.

What is PRP?

And thanks for the info on hardwiring it, I appreciate it.

This is the best I've got. As far as our DIY on the install, it's an easy 1, 2, 3:

1. Buy Navi
2. Take it Best Buy $35 Install
3. Drive Home using Navi.

Sorry about that, couldn't resist. We bought the basic install when we bought the Navi. There are some install tips in that thread though, IIRC.

PRP is Best Buy's Product Replacement Program that they have. The reviews I heard was that it freezes a lot especially while driving. You might be lucky though.

I didn't purchase their PRP. I figured that the Magellan 4250 is robust and proven enough not to require a replacement insurance. I hope I'm right. If it appears that I have more problems with it than I can take, I'll put it for sale on eBay and buy a Garmin 255W when it is released in June.
