Bluetooth Range?

Does anyone know the range of Bluetooth? When I was changing my door lock setting in my car while it was in the garage, I noticed my phone was still connected to my car via bluetooth even though it was upstairs in the house (probably 50 ft and several walls away)! I was under the impression that Bluetooth was only short range.

A Google search revealed that the effective range is about 32 ft (10m). I would assume this is the maximum range you could go and actually still use the device. I too can still see the phone icon in the display eventhough the phone is inside my house. A test revealed that it didn't really work when attempting to use it at that range.

I've been well past the standard 10 meter range. In fact, I was once in the parking lot at my GF's apartment. My phone was three stories above, inside the apartment, sitting by the couch and I was able to make a crystal clear call w/ my RAZR. Pretty slick.

Would battery level play a part, what about different types of phones?

Was your car parked right underneath the window and was the phone on the couch near a window? That can make a big difference as opposed to having to go through walls.

No, we are talking through an exterior wall, past a baby grand piano, an end table and then a couch. All on the third floor. My car was about 20 degrees East of the room, 20 feet from the wall.

That sounds pretty good then. Mine is also a RAZR and I couldn't get it to work at all when the phone was inside the house and the car was in the garage.

I left my phone on my kitchen counter (20 or so feet away) while I was washing the car. I opened the windows to turn on the stereo, and heard "You have an incoming call".

I love HFL!

Just because the phone says it is connected, does not necessarily mean it is. I noticed that the TL does not explicitly disconnect the connection when you turn off your ignition. Eventually, however, the connection times out.

Moreover, there are two classes of bluetooth, 1 and 2. Class 1 allows connectivity of up to 100m and class 2, up to 10m. All phones (AFAIK) use Class 2 (to save power). Some USB dongles use Class 1. I don't know if the TL uses class 1 or 2. From what I'm hearing, it looks like it's using Class 1.

This is by design and it's in the manual.
