Afternoon Y’all,

Did several searches for DVD/DVD-A/store/buy but no worthwhile results were returned.

Anyway, title says it all. I've been to Amazon, Buy.com and BN.com (Barnes and Noble) and have generally been disappointed with the selection of DVD-A's. I have also been to several BestBuys in the Houston area and again would call their selection somewhat lackluster.

Do any of you guys or gals know any good stores (online of traditional) that offer a wide selection of titles, good prices and free shipping (if applicable).

Thanks!

J.Edward

I have to agree that Best Buy doesn't have a wide variety of DVD-A's. When I went in to buy a while back...it took three different people (in the music section) to figure out what they were and where they were located. At this point, I was impressed because they had more than 10 DVD-A's; whereas the now closed Media Play had a section with about three.

Haven't had much luck online finding one's that I'd like to buy. And never thought to check at Border's books and haven't been to Circuit City, yet.

Thanks for the info guys!
Hopefully, I'll have better luck with your online suggestions...

My favorite is Acoustic Sounds -- http://store.acousticsounds.com/

This is definitely an audiophile site.

Since no one else mentioned it, Circuit City online, 452 discs, free shipping with purchase price over $25 excluding taxes and shipping fees.

Most of the Brick & Mortar stores (CC & BB) removed thier instore inventory last year, probably due to poor sales. You may find some at Fry's, but the selection is very limited compared to the online sites mentioned.

I researched 14 sites before I got my TL, here are a couple of others and a quick ranking by selection and price. I only researched rock titles such as Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC, U2, Natalie Merchant,...

buy.com has a nice selection and about average pricing.
deepdiscountdvd.com has a slightly smaller collection but great pricing

3deers and deepdiscountdvd.com are typically the cheapest, about $2-$7 cheaper per title than the others.

By selection (1 = highest # titles)
1. amusicdirect, 3deers
2. deepdiscountdvd, buy.com, towerrecords, acoutsticsounds
3. dvdplanet, dvdempire, cduniverse, barnesandnoble, jr.com
4. (limited to none) sonymusicstore, 5point1,

By price (1 = lowest prices)
1. 3deers, deepdiscountdvd,
2. dvdplanet, sonymusicstore
3. buy.com, towerrecords, cduniverse
4. amusicdirect, dvdempire, acousticsounds, jr.com
5. barnesandnoble, 5point1

Hope this helps

So is it pretty safe to say this format is dead, or at least on a temporary hiatus? Most of the selections I see on these sites were made in '01 and '02, shortly after the format came out. It's been very slow lately.

It looks to me that the stand alone DVD-A format is on life support. I think the only hope for survival -- and also the best hope for the CD surviving as a format -- is DualDisc. DVD-A has not caught on, I think, for a number of reasons: a) cost; b) most people don't pay enough attention to hear the difference; and c) confusion about the format itself. DualDisc addresses a (which make no sense to me; why would a dual sided disc be cheaper) and c (in that people feel they are getting something extra , i.e., video, etc). As for b, well that is a bigger problem. Some people literally can't hear the difference. Most simply don't care. The CD never would have survived if it had been embraced solely by audiophiles.
