Backup (Reverse) Camera On-Demand

Does anybody have any information as to a way of activating the backup (reverse) camera when in normal "drive" mode? I think it a wonderful feature, but I'd like to use it more than just when backing up the car. I'd like to have it augment the rearview mirror when driving forward.

If I am correct, all you have to do is get another power source to the camer that is sitched. I think this because the drive might just do what dom's device does, switch the screen when the source is detected

That would be kind of nice to make a switch to be able to turn it on, that way when you're not using the navi or a/c controls, you could have another rearview mirror... that would make 4

I remember reading that the factory backup camera connects to the navi DVD-Rom. You'll have to tamper with that harness to get it to work.

Thumbs up Found an answer

I spoke with the lead technician at my local Acura dealership and he provided me with a wiring schematic and a solution that he believes will work.

You will have to remove the main under-dash interior fuse/relay box. If you turn this housing over there will be some wiring harness connectors. Looking at it from the rear, it will be the bottom right harness. The socket is labeled in the book as "P (MICU)". It appears to be a 30-pin connector. If you locate pin-20 there should be a white wire coming off of it.

As a test, place the car in park and simply ground the wire at the pin-20 connection point (while the wire is connected.) This should trip the camera into an active state. If this test works, perform the following to make it switch selectable.

Coming off of the pin-20 connection (no more than a few inches) cut the white wire and place a diode in the line. From the diode, run a wire to a simple switch. One side of the switch will be connected to the new wire coming off of the diode and the other side of the switch will be grounded. The diode prevents the "presence of ground" from being detected by the "A/T Reverse Position Circuit".

The camera should still activate normally when the transmission is placed in reverse, but it will now be able to be activated on demand by your switch.

Good way to keep tailgaters off! I personally like the brake mod button where you just keep pressing a button to make it appear as if you're braking...

Rear lights Activating

RE: Lights coming on when switch is activated...

According to the Acura tech, the diode will prevent that from happening. The "presence of ground" that the camera triggers off of will not feed back into the Reverse Position Circuit. The camera will come on but nothing else in the car will know it has been activated.

I doubt it. I was just in my buddy's Q7 this weekend and it is in that truck by design. I am guessing it is because it is not viewed as a distraction but a driving aid. A lot of buses and trucks already use cameras instead of mirrors as it is produces better results...

BUMP...

Anyone done this one a 2010 TL w/ Tech? I've been searching for the wiring diagram and cannot find one either. I think it would be a nice feature as well.

I found the complete diagrams on AllData.com, but I can't decipher the proper wire or method. Do the nav/video mods I've seen advertised on here offer the camera on demand as an option?

I'm wondering if the diode will make my left camera input into the nav system stop blinking.

I installed a camera under each side-view mirror, and, using Dom's unit and the blinker, can activate the camera to turn on under my right mirror. It's like Honda's LaneWatch system but I have the only Acura with this. The problem is that when I put on the left signal, the screen blinks. Not sure why.
