Backup Camera Suggestions
Hey guys,
I just bought a 4.3" monitor (for $30) with intent on hiding it in the lower storage compartment under the radio and bringing it out when I need it.
Just need suggestions on what backup camera to use with it.
I hear BOYO is good, specially the VTK350, but it costs like $70 total for me since I'm in Canada, unless someone can help me out and ship it up here, it's $29 USD with free shipping to USA, probably an additional $12 to ship, still better than $70
Thanks!
I have a navi, but spending 200 on a video module is a bit too much for me. Then I'd have to buy a camera in addition to the video module.
Hopefully my project will just set me back under $100.
Maybe in the future I will get a video module if I see a good price, but in that case I'd still need a rear camera to pair with it so might as well get one now

Hey! Esky cameras are great - take a look at their options on Amazon. Smaller than BOYO and fit nicely under the area right above the license plate, virtually invisible.
Amazon.com : Esky EC170-06 World Smallest HD Color CCD Waterproof Vehicle Car Rear View Backup Camera, 170 Degree Viewing Angle Rearview Camera(0.86*0.65*0.50 inch) : Vehicle Video Products : Car Electronics
Since we've done a deal before, I'm willing to help you on the shipping. PM me and we can figure out details.

That's awesome, thanks!
I was worried, the BOYO is indeed a big camera but I heard the quality is outstanding.
I've have to do some reading on the Esky and get back to you =)
Interesting to hear good things about Esky - The 4.3" monitor I bought was from Esky!
EDIT:
After checking out this thread: https://acurazine.com/forums/audio-b...lation-898645/
I'll definitely be buying the Esky!
Great news is they ship to Canada, which is really why I'm gonna go for it =)
Thanks again!

If there's one thing the 2004/5/6 TL needs, it's a BACKUP CAMERA! Why didn't Acura include this with the Navi models those years? After all, they did figure out that this is car with a horrible rear view and therefore needs one, that's why they included it for 2007/8.
Federal law mandates backup cameras on all new cars starting with the 2015 model year.

Totally agreed - the 2007-2008 TL and TSX (and maybe the 2006 TSX) have a port on the Navigation DVD reader in the trunk that allows easy hookup to the screen, but the 2004-2006 TLs had to go through Nav2Go and other workarounds. Thankfully, AcuraZine and other enterprising folks figured out a solution that I used, and later upgraded to the Nexus 7 tablet. My girlfriend said my 2005 TL, with the Nexus 7 tablet, is a nicer system than her 2015 Cadillac SRX with CUE. My car felt happy...

All of the below is based on you understanding the Nexus 7 tablet installation threads. If you haven't familiarized yourself with those, read through to get a gist. With either route, the connections are as follows:
Camera --> Analog-to-Digital Video Converter --> USB Hub --> OTG Cable --> Nexus (video accessed by DashCam or another app)

Two options:
- Timur's old USB-ROM kernel for the 2012 Nexus (free) had trouble accepting analog video from EasyCap and other common Analog-to-Digital video converters, but I found a custom solution from Japan (Febon 100) for $70 that has worked well.
- Timur's new USB-ROM kernel for the 2013 Nexus ($30?) includes drivers for the EasyCap video converter ($10-$20) that didn't work as consistently with the 2012 Nexus.

With $15 more of stuff you can also get free shipping.

Ended up getting the EC170-08 for pretty much the same price since it qualified for free shipping with purchases over $25 CAD on Amazon.ca
Thanks again!

Don't buy the camera off Amazon.com, i made the mistake
If you buy it off Amazon.com, it cost $33.86 USD total, convert to CAD is around $42.
On Amazon.ca, it costs $20 plus maybe $7 for shipping, so $27 CAD total.
Seems like the EC170-08 is a much bigger camera, hopefully it works out for you

I noticed!! I never realized the size difference until after I purchased it.... STUPID me!!!
I'm trying to get hisgadget to switch my order to get the 06 instead.
Yeah, on amazon.ca the 06 comes up to about $27 CAD after tax and shipping
I'm trying to get all the pieces in place for my double din conversion.
I might be the first 07/08 non-navi owner on this site to do it so I am curious to see what it looks like.
My deck has the input for rear cam so that's why I need this. Might as well do everything 1 time.
Was your install fairly easy? Did you do it yourself?

Install was relatively easy.
Cut into license plate assembly to retrofit camera, splice wires into reverse light wires, remove rear seats and panelling to route video wire to the front.
Nothing I've never done before
You'll love it, especially since you're putting a double din in the car. It'll look super clean.
My reverse camera project is kinda ghetto lol
Composed of 4.3" monitor that's hidden in storage compartment under radio - $30 CAD. Rear camera - $27 CAD (or if you're stupid like me and bought from amazon.com - $42), custom mounting supplies - $10.
Poor man's reverse camera lol

Hey GP16, wondering about that cheap 4.3 esky monitor you got.
Is it this one?
Esky Foldable 4.3 Inch Color LCD TFT Rearview Monitor screen for Car Backup Camera: Amazon.ca: Electronics
Or that one?
The later couldn't you put the foot part in the top storage compartment and bend so the screen faces you at all times? not sure if that's possible or if you understand.

I bought the one from the first link
The only downside was I thought all the wires and motherboard were inside the screen portion so all I have to do was remove the ridiculous stand it had. I was wrong.
Upon disassembling everything, I found out:
The screen is attached to a small motherboard chip which is located inside the stand. It is attached to the motherboard via a ribbon cable. I'll probably end up mounting the motherboard inside the storage compartment (the ribbon cable is super long), or just mount the motherboard behind the screen.
I have many pictures of the disassembly and install, I'm just not 100% done this project yet to post it lol
The screen and motherboard are just chilling on the passenger seat while I figure out the mounting.
Although everything is wired up and working, I don't use the screen to back up currently, it's too dangerous as I'd have to lean over and look down at the passenger seat.
I'm sure the second one would work if you bend the footing, but I wanted a method to allow the screen to be hidden inside the storage compartment

Ah I see. But yes you can see the ribbon cable in a picture if you look carefully.
Strange they couldn't make it all embedded into the screen. That way it would have removed a potential breaking point (bending of the ribbon over and over) and they could have supplied a cheap and light stand. At the cost of making the monitor part slightly thicker.
I'm not looking into buying the monitor for myself but at $50 for a small monitor + camera it's a nice present. Like for my mother, who went over a high parking block and destroyed the Mazda 3 bumper.

I have this camera and so far really like it.
