Audio questions

I already have a pretty good idea about how I will set everything up, but I have some general questions about the components.

I want to replace the factory amps. I plan on putting the amp for the highs and mids under the passenger seat, and just extent the wiring from the amp behind the kick panel to that amp. The amp for the sub, well, I guess I will either stick it under the drivers seats, or stick it in the trunk. I figured I would replace the stock sub with another 8" and seal that area up as much as possible or I would just put a little 8" or 10" in the trunk in one of the front corners. The rest of the speakers in the car I will just replace with aftermarket ones.

Now, do I need a 6 channel amp to run 6 speakers? I don't really know much about amps, and I would think I do need a 6 channel amp for 6 speakers, but I am not sure hence the question.

Other than that, I was planning on going with 4 ohm speakers for sound quality.

Any thoughts?

Edit: btw, it's a 2004 TL no Nav.

get 2 seperate amps..mono amp for the sub and 4 channel for the interior speakers..i'd put both amps in the trunk bolted to the seatback...i'd also sound deaden the front doors remove the rear sub(to get more bass in the cabin) and deaden the rear deck..

So, just to be sure, I can run all 6 highs and mids off of a 4 channel amp. I plan on going with 4 ohms, and if I mount them in the trunk, then I can just reuse the already existing wires that run to the amp behind the passenger kick panel.

For the sub, you are saying remove and put a box in the trunk. Ok. I do understand a closed setup will sound much better, and I don't need over powering base, just a nice balance that sounds good inside the car, so a box with a single 8" or 10" in the trunk should be fine.

If I put a box in the trunk, will I get that retarded trunk rattle if I don't deaden the trunk lid?

For deadening, just remove the panels on the doors, remove the rear deck, which I will have to do any way in order to remove the sub, and stick sound mat in there right?

Sound about right?

Also, feel free to list the any speakers you think I should replace the factory speakers with. I plan on basically replacing all of them, but I will probably just install the amps first MAYBE with the sub, and then replace the highs and mids maybe a couple weeks later.

I appreciate your time.

with the components the mid and tweeter hook up to a crossover..then crossover to amp..so yes they all get powered off a 4 channel amp..a closed setup would sound alot better..a since 10 sealed would be fine..down the line if you crave for more bass you can get an extra sub and put them in a ported box..about the rattle..it's almost impossible to fully get rid of it..but sound deadening the trunk lid will help alot..and yes just apply the sheets..

Would it not cost less to get a 6 channel amp than getting a 4 channel amp and a crossover?

For the crossover route, just get a 3 way crossover?

Any advice on speaker choices?

Thanks again!!

image dynamics speakers... what are those? I know sound quality and Why spend almost 200$ on an off name brand. Infinity kappa's are the way to go. The pdx amp is a superb choice to power them.

ID is far from an off brand. It's very well known in the car audio community. I had the Kappas and now the IDs and you can't begin to compare. The IDs blow the Kappas away in every category.

Image Dynamics makes some of the best stuff around. Their subs are amazing. Ther are plenty of lesser known (to the general public) audio companies that make some of the best drivers around. Morel, Hertz, Focal, CDT, Seas, Dynaudio come to mind.

Lots of advertising (Infinity) does not means it's the best stuff.

I have CDTs speakers and PDX amps. Great combo.

Weskurtz81, sounds like you want to run active crossovers if you're using seperate amps for the mid and highs. I would suggest you use one amp, 4 channel for the fronts, your mids and highs. One amp for the rears, 2 channel running some matching coaxials. One high watt sub amp pushing a 10 or 12 in the trunk. If you want to use the stock head unit I would suggest you keep the stock amp and just add a LOC between the stock amp and the new amps.

Sorry for any typos, I am typing this on my Carpc and the screen is very small

hi, i am in the process of updating my system right now. I have added 2 mtx 12" 8000 with 1 cubic ft per woofer, 2 soundstream 520 amps and audio control lc6i. All sound good except for the stock rear speakers. They rattle and had trouble tuning the system because the rear speakers keep pulling the stage to the rear. Just shutting them off sounds the best. I love the image dynamic product, how do you think they compare to the MB quart reference series? Did you fit the tweeters in the stock locations? Did you remove the stock crossover? I would like to use the stock wire for the front doors. Any problems mounting the ID in the front doors? Appreciate any help

i highly doubt he even knows what a active setup is(no offense to op) he probably just didn't know it goes crossover to amp instead of speakers to amp

i'd just keep it simple with a passive setup

I have an Audison amp that is a surround amp so it has all channels. No need for a second amp. A little pricey but good.
