Attempting a non-nav to nav convertion. NEED HELP

I am a new Acura owner and I am going to attempt the nav conversion. I know I am getting myself into a project but I wanna try it. I found most of the components ( screen, radio, computer ) but I am having trouble finding the harnesses. Does anyone sell just what I need to do this ? I saw a couple threads of people doing this convertion and it helped but I am still a lil nervous.

First off welcome to AZ. Secondly, that's one hell of a topic for your first post. This is not for the faint of heart. As for the harnesses, good luck. Your either going to want to build your own, pull them from a junkyard, or bite the bullet and buy them new (all 3 add up to $1200 new)...

Do you have a 04-06 or 07-08? Are all your parts from the same "sub-generation"?

Thank you for the welcome. I bought everything out of an 05 TL ($1000 LKQ). I own an 04. I was really debating on buying an 07-08 system but I could not find a thread of someone doing a no-nav 04 to nav 07-08 so I figured I would go with the safe bet.

if you search, you will find a few threads that has all the parts needed, such as steering wheel buttons, microphones, antenna, harnesses, etc. The conversion is VERY labor intensive and requires good electrical and wiring skills.

Does anyone know if I have to run any wires to the new steering wheel controls or is it just plug and play.

Hmm, good question. I'd have to say that since I have yet to see anyone say anything about running wires to that spot, I'd say it is just p-n-p. Good question though.

you need to run just one wire from the navi to the steering wheel sub harness. but it is plug'n play you'll just have to have the correct pin at the end. then just plug it in

Thanks man. I'm def gonna need your help cause I desided to make my own harness off the pig tails of the nav computer and nav screen. I am all set with paying $500 for the pre-made harness. I am waiting on LKQ to get back to me about the roof harness.

So I got lazy and just ordered a dash, floor and roof harness ($250). It should be here early next week along with everything else. I went to my local Acura dealership and grabbed the service manual and electronic troubleshoot books. Thanks guys for all your help so far.

$250 sounds too cheap for all 3 harnesses. are the used? what are you gonna do separate the navi wires or connect eveything? cuz thats not the lazy way its way more work connecting everything.

Might seem expensive but I just paid 1800 bucks off of ebay for to convert my 08 non nav to nav. Got everything... dvd player, nav screen, small display, voice control buttons and a custom harness with directions. (actually didn't want to deal with pulling out airbag so opted for custom buttons near my VSA button instead of factory.)

I did my install this weekend... only took 8 hours with little brainpower needed. (mainly cause it was my first time to take apart console... I was a little gunshy) WAY WORTH THE EXTRA BUCKS TO HAVE NO HEADACHES!!!! AND I GET A 6 MONTH WARRANTY.

Martin helped me with all my questions during install. Only thing that doesnt work is my link from the nav to bluetooth. Nav works, bluetooth works but can't call up a nearest location and just hit call button. But oh well I can deal with that.

Martin's email is acurahondatech@comcast.net if anyone else wants his kits. I definately recommend.

yeah the harnesses are used. I am gonna separate the nav wires and re-shrink everything. I was just not gonna pay the 500 for the pre-made harnesses

did you get xm nav traffic to work too?
if so, you're one of the first to do a complete 08 conversion.
if you didn't touch the bluetooth (in the roof dome lights), that's probably why the nav/bluetooth doesn't work.
Congrats.

No the Nav Traffic is not on this one. I'm not up on all the different versions but I assume this is an 06 model disc. Its silver.

I was mainly just after the touchscreen and regular nav. I'm easy to please.

I did land 7 wires at the bluetooth model in ceiling by martins directions. I think that was his attempt at making it work. He said he will call me if he figures out why its not working.

Now my voice activation works great does that go through the bluetooth mic or is there another?

To have Nav Traffic you have to have a 07/08 XM receiver. Which I assume means you also need the 07/08 nav drive and software as well.

Only one mic as far as I know. The 07/08 HFL adds phonebook importation.

The reason why your navi/bluetooth is not working is probably because you do not have the 07/08 navi xm receiver. Bluetooth wires go from navi drive -> xm receiver -> HFL unit (in the roof). You probably have bluetooth wires from navi drive to HFL unit only.

So do you think my 08 came with the navi xm receiver even though it wasnt a nav model? Or would I have to purchase a navi xm?

Also where is navi xm located in car?

And I meant to say you are correct... my harness only connects to navi drive and bluetooth. I have already looked in my diagnostics before and it definately shows red for this leg of the diagram.

You think it would it be as easy as purchasing the xm navi and running a few more wires to get it in "series" with my drive to bluetooth?

Just out of curiosity are you guys converting to the Acura navigation system or are you getting like an aftermarket system from Kenwood or Pioneer or something like that?

Be careful ordering harnesses through car-part.com. It took me forever to find a roof harness and when it arrived, not only was it incomplete but it was from the wrong car! And many salvage yards do not deal with harnesses at all (it's not cost-effective for them to take apart an entire car to remove the harness because they span the entire car).
Salvagers are good for hardware units, like navi drives, stereos, etc. They generally suck at harnesses.

isn't that true. I just called the guy and he tells me that someone had cut a plug off by the passenger side kick panel and he doesn't know what it to. I pray that its not a connector I need.

P.S

The only thing that suck is the nav antenna won't be here till next week. DAMN

Well I started stripping the harnesses at 3 pm and I finished about an hour ago. So it took me 8 1/2 hrs to get it ready for install. I only ran into a few headaches so far. ( thank god for jptl04 cause his thread and quick response saved me ) I had a problem removing the pins from the roof harness plug and I got frustrated and just cut em. So I had to go and remove pins from other plugs like it and sotter it together but the wires aren't the same colors. O well I figured it out. I have 2 wires to figure out tomorrow before install. I have a few pictures taken during night so I will post everything as soon as im finished.

^Which year is this? Things change going from 04-06 parts, 07-08 parts, and 04 car to 07+ nav conversion. GPS receiver is diff, it adds navtraffic. New HFL isn't required but the 07+ adds phonebook importation. Good list though.

What size wire did you use to make the harnesses? And what about avg length of the nav drive -> display harness. Assuming I'd run the needed navi "harness" the same way you have, along the passenger side.

Sorry for thread jack, we are just doing the same exact stuff.

What size wire did you use to make the harnesses? And what about avg length of the nav drive -> display harness. Assuming I'd run the needed navi "harness" the same way you have, along the passenger side.

Sorry for thread jack, we are just doing the same exact stuff.
22 gauge copper stranded wire. i forgot the length, just take some yarn run it from the center were the display is down the passenger side floor and to the trunk right corner where the dvd rom drive is measure it thats your length. cut one wire to length and run it exactly how its going to go under the covers behind the rear seat to the corner in the trunk. just to make sure of the length. it's better to be a little longer than too short.

So I have most of everything wired up and I tested today with the grey wire that does to the speed sensor (where ever that is ????)_ and the roof harness not hooked up. Everything was working but I have a wire crossed somewhere cause when I put my car in neutral the nav goes into day mode and when I put it in drive or reverse it goes into night mode. Also when I turn right on a street the nav thinks I turn left and it takes about 5 seconds to figure it out. Im guessing its the grey wire thats messed up on that but I have no idea where it connects too. jptl04 any suggestions . Oh and I smashed my camera in anger last night so bear with me with the photos.

Quick Reply: Attempting a non-nav to nav convertion. NEED HELP
