Another Nexus install to replace factory navigation

My factory nav started dying a slow death so i decided to replace it and put it and me out of our misery Came across a thread here from aameghooand started looking at others here who have done it as well. Thanks to aameghoo, mzilvarand Rhydon, the install went without a hitch. Here is what I bought:

32GB 1st Gen Nexus 7
ISIMPLE ISHD651
FiiO E7 DAC
Cable Matters 4-Port SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Mini "Quad" Hub
Anker USB car charger
Micro USB Host OTG Cable
Alumilite Amazing Mold Putty
USB extention cable
WiFi backup camera

image hosting over 10mb

I tried a few ROMs and decided to use KangaromV2 from XDA along with the Kang-aroo kernel. Also installed tasker, Nexus media explorer and CoPilot GPS. I have 3 different backup with different ROMs on the tablet so i can easily switch between ROMs. I am happy with the Kangarom so far.

Here are some of the pics from the install. i will plastidip the silver part on the trunk that has the camera so it blends in. The weather is kind of crappy in Houston right now so maybe in a day or two. Let me know what you guys think.

offline maps

Check out Here Maps Beta. Its not too bad, I like it better than co-pilot. Some screens are portrait only but I hope they fix that once its out of beta.

Install looks good, I need to get my ass in gear and do this soon. I am testing autodroid 1.2 ROM.

Does the standard navi bezel need cutting? I bought a non-navi bezel but my dremel tore up the edges. Any suggestions?

What did you end up doing with the original navi screen? I was thinking about extending it into the glovebox in case I needed to access it for daylight savings time changes, etc.

Post up some more vids if you get time.

I didn't have to cut the navi bezel. The tablet fits right in. I did relocate the USB and audio jack on the tablet. The original navi screen is behind the tablet. I did not put the metal casing back on so everything kind of fit without too much trouble.

How did you get the wifi backup camera part working in tandem with shifting to reverse? :-) Is it hooked on the backup lights?

Yes it has 3 wires, one to positive, one to ground and one to reverse light. I might have to use tasker after all. Everytime the tab goes to sleep I have to click the app before it starts working again.

Thanks. Used the ground by the factory navigation in the trunk. The positive wire is wired into the tail light LED board connector. That connector has 3 wires going to it. I used the middle wire. The last one for the reverse is tapped into the backup light positive wire.

Backup camera at night seems like it would be largely affected by backup lights. With good ones with not a terrible hotspot I don't think it would be an issue.
But with weak ones or ones that are very directional I can imagine it could be hard to see.

Grab a pic zsameer, let's see this haha.

I have LED backup lights i kinda put together myself. So they are better than stock bulbs but nothing special. I will try to take a pic tonight.

Bit overexposed, but then again you'd be silly not to see obstacles unless they were right to your car. Thanks for the pics!

Its a cheap and easy to install camera but you get what you pay for. The angle on this camera does not cover the sides or the bottom. All you see is what's right behind you. I miss my old camera but this will do for now. People looking to do this better go the USB route and get a better camera. Its better than not having any thing at all but not the greatest quality or angle. Can't beat the whole system for under 40 bucks.

I wonder about the feasability of crafting a really cheap wide angle/concave lens for that little camera. Like a lens made for LED or lasers on eBay or similar. It would distort the view and the red/yellow/green scales in the picture wouldn't fit well anymore, but you'd see more on the edges.

The first camera looks good but does it automatically connect when you go in reverse? It doesn't specify that you might want to check with the seller on that other than that the build quality is a lot better than the one I got.

How hard was it to take the old backup camera out? Part of what has been stopping me from throwing it in is the old one and not sure how to make it look nice. And it seems like at the moment there is a lot to do on the software side to get everything working properly.

The old camera that I took out was not factory. I installed it myself when I first bought the car. It was not too hard to install so removing it was not hard either. I will be redoing my camera location. Waiting on the new license plate frame to come in since I drilled in this one. The camera should be pointing down a bit and since this is pointing directly outward it doesn't give me a good idea as to where my car is. I would not recommend installing it the way I did.
