Aftermarket Subwoofer Problem

hey guys...i went to a local audio shop a while back to get a subwoofer and amp installed in my trunk.

everything seemed fine because it sounded pretty good to me. the problem arose when i used adobeman's software to create my own dvd-a disks. when i play them, it sounded like there is too much bass.

so i called up my installer and he says he tried using the signal for the stock sub but it didn't work, so he just used the signal from the mids in the back seat. so i figured that the signal that is going to the mids (and meant only for mids) in the back was also going to the subwoofer (since dvd-a has 7.1 channel sound as opposed to the regular 2-channel) and that's what was creating the problem.

so my question is, is my installer lying to me? is it possible to use the signal that goes to the stock subwoofer? i feel like he just told me that so he won't have to mess with it again.

thanks for all your help guys.

did your installer say why it didn't work? adding a sub and an amp isn't a complicated set up, so why it wouldn't work i don't get...

he said that no sound came out of it when the setup was hooked up to the wire from the original subwoofer.

to me, this doesn't make a whole lot of sense...if you can get your sub to work by using the mid signal, then why wouldn't it work w/ it's original signal? i would take it to a different audio shop and have them check it out...i don't see why your installer would lie to you, but he may have just set something up wrong...if i were more technically advanced in this area, i'd be more specific... ...but if it were me, i would take it to someone else to look at and see what they say, just so you have another opinion...

Does anyone have any other opinions or experience with this?

I'll probably go to another audio shop tommorrow to see what's up.

just out of curiosity, what kind of amp and sub did you get? ...it could be your amp doesn't mix well with your stock signal to the sub...

There are lots of examples in this forum of aftermarket subs installed an kickin. Might be a good idea to find another installer.

Is it possible that you had your sub turned off? (if you keep pressing the right knob and get to the subwoofer, then turn the know counterclockwise to reduce the subwoofer volume, after -6 it goes to "off" position. If, inadvertently this was set to off, and your installer hooked up the subwoofer speaker wires to the LOC/Amp, he would not have gotten any signal....

You definetly need to find another installer/shop. I did the install myself, and tapped into the wires after the factoy amp, which is actually a low level output, i ran a spliced rca from there to my aftermarket RF amp. And now when i cut the bass on the factory radio (sub control) it shuts off my after market as well. I know for a fact that the shop has no clue what the hell they are talking about ! .. but yeaa it is possible to do what you want.

I am using the rear subwoofer channel for my aftermarket amp/sub and it works well. I connected the speaker level subwoofer channel into a LOC and into the amp.

However, I have found that the rear mids are not full frequency and have NO bass. I used the speaker level channels from the rear mids for my aftermarket amp and am getting no mid-level bass in my speakers.

I plan to solder in some RCAs into the pre-factory amp front channels and see if that works.

Perhaps your installer increased the gains on your subwoofer amp to make this work and is somehow playing differently for your dvd-a's???
