Aftermarket NAV
Aftermarket NAV
I made the huge mistake of not getting nav when I bought my TL. Now I need to add it so im looking for some aftermarket nav that will look nice. Does anyone have any custom pic of how they added nav (aftermarket not conversion)

I totally love the Garmin. And as much as I love the Garmin, I dislike the TL's NAVI.
Which Garmin do you have? As a Acura navi lover, I am looking for an aftermarket nav for my other car. I would like something thats easy to use, has touch screen and talks you thru the directions. I really don't want to spend more than $250ish. I am also unfamiliar with all the options on an aftermarket nav. Does this sound do-able? Any ideas from people would be greatly appreciated, with reasons why you like the one your recommending
Yeah, even the lowest cost Navi's have Voice Guided Directions, are easy to use and have a touch screen.
We got our daughter a Magellan 3200 for ~$150 for Christmas and it has all those features. For $50 - $100 more you can do better and I'd recommend the extra $ just to get the larger POI database.
There's a couple pic's in the 2G forum. https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=171790

thanks Bear, I am thinking about the Garmin c340. It seems to fit all my requirements and I haven't really seen anything bad about it. It might be a little while before I purchase it , so it could actually end up being cheaper.
hey Tim,
I haven't even heard of Navigon before. That one looks pretty sweet, but if it's their high end it's probably more than I want to spend.
Are you thinking of putting an aftermarket nav in your TL?

I've read some reviews that are critical of the Garmin Nuvi line because they don't have all the data displayed on the screen at once (this page for example).
I too am casually looking for one of these guys. My advice (and I will be taking my own advice) is to try whatever you're planning to get before you buy it to make sure the UI and features are to your liking. Secondly, be sure you read the fine print on the store's return policy; most of them charge you a 15-25 % restocking fee if you open the box. Also, shop around online before using a local retailer like Best Buy. They should be suited for false advertising since nothing in that entire store is ever a 'best buy' in my experience

Sir.. you have been in my car, I have Nav! I'll let you pass this time, but don't forget again!

7100 MSRP $649
5100 MSRP $499
2100 MSRP $249
You can add traffic updates and Zagat service to the 2100 @ $39/each
As far as the maps, all of them have the 3d feature w/ TTS for road names.. Maybe Acura should integrate one of these as the OEM nav system in the 4GTL !

I think Navigon is one of the company's that provides the other vendors with the maps that they use in their products. I could be getting them confused with someone else though. I've also read reviews that their systems, while visually brilliant -- don't work as well as the more established GPS vendors.
Dash.net has a device coming out in February that works really well and has hive-based traffic alerts and a live internet connection that should be a good option to consider as well.

because of the minimal configuration there is no way on a route with the nuvi to see all of: current speed; ETA; compass; map; distance left to destination; distance to next turn; direction of turn... all at the same time. While it may not be critical to see ALL of this information at once, I consider it minimally critical to see at least: distance to next turn; type of turn; and current speed; along with the map. There is no way to do this with the nuvi.
i dont know what he is talking about, he didnt set it right. current speed is not show but u can hit the button it will show. damn newbie. or maybe he has 350 , i have 660

Now that I think about it, I remember you as having nav. What threw me was, I was thinking(part of the problem right there) of the pic you posted of an interior shot and a smart ass comment about the right side of your steering wheel being the cruise control buttons. That car didn't have nav.
Garmin Nuvi line rocks
I have Navi in my TL & a Pioneer AVIC D3 nav unit in my truck. I love them both, but....... I have a Garmin Nuvi for traveling for work. I have been using the Garmin Nuvi's since they first came out (the original 350). All of the GPS are a personal preference, check out the options, and be realistic about what you need. I have found the Garmin's to be the best all around option, and some of the easiest for people to use.
If you want inexpensive check out the Garmin Nuvi 200 or 200W (widescreen) you can get them for $180 & $200 respectively.
There are also good options out there from Alpine (Blackbird), Magellin, Mio, etc.....
too many to name. As I said the best thing to do is to go to the store and play with each to see what interface you like best.

Actually, I have been looking online at the nuvi 360. Costco is about to have $100 off. All the ones I have seen in the store are dummy units that don't do anything. It would be nice to be able to play with them a little before purchasing though.

I wanted to put in a avic-z2 as well, but was not sure of the fit. Is that a custom dash kit or kit that came with avic-z2?
