2006 TL Radio Intermittently Turns off

I have an 06 TL doing making my life hard. The stock radio works beautifully about 40% of the time, but sometimes as soon as you mess with it, it will just cut off and stop working. Then you have to restart the engine in order to get the radio working again. We have learned to set it and not mess with it. My wife just wants to be able to plug her iphone up and jam out and she is tired of using the FM transmitter I got her. If there is an aftermarket option I'd be interested but I would hate to lose the functionality of the steering wheel controls. I like to keep all my vehicles as factory as possible. When the radio is acting right the sound quality is very good, especially on a CD. Only other issue this car has is the HFL issue and will not pair to our phones whatsoever. All I care about is the music. Please someone enlighten me, I have seen similar posts about this very same issue and no one has seemed to reply...
