It's not that difficult to make

With just a table grinder, a heat gun, and some ABS Plastic I was able to make my own double din trim kit. for less than 10 bucks

...And i know what you guys are thinking, "smooth out the trim!" i am fully aware that the appearance of the trim's exterior isn't 'acurazine' quality...but one thing at a time. i plan on making a replica of this and layering it with some fiberglass and paint it flat black. Second i plan on fiberglassing the side trims on both sides of the radio to completely remove the half circles. All this in good time. My time is not that wide and my pockets are not that deep.

with something like the AVIC...do we end up losing HFL functionality? Do we lose steering wheel control? Very interested in something like this.

Also, what would display on the lower half of the stock display now that there's no more OEM radio?

You will lose HFL. You can keep your steering wheel controls with an adapter. The lower half of the display will light up but not display anything except your cell phone bars (which only means that you have so many bars, the HFL will still not work). to see what i mean, turn on your car and manually turn off your radio.

price is going to be a big factor here, Normal double din dash kits are not much. 150-200 jus for a dash kit is not reasonable.

I believe kenwood makes a OEM integration piece that allows you to retain everything. I think its the KOS-V1000 and KOS-V500. Its basicall a stand- alone unit that grabs the signal from the stock radio and allows you to add a screen to the car.

i quess another one bites the dust.

if it ever happened, thats a alot of loot for some plastic.

somebody educate me on my terms: relocating non nav screen to storage compartment and replacing it w/ after market DDin is considered "carpc" or "carputer".

i would love to put a DDin inplace of non nav screen and keep the factory headunit as is. anyone know if you'll lose some functions of the radio and bluetooth etc, by relocating the non nav screen to storage compartment? what are the pros and cons ?

Bringing back a old thread. Here's my Double Din Solution.

Yes, I know I have to set the date on the Head Unit

No, That's not a Navi screen. It's an 8" widescreen touchscreen monitor for my CarPC

you should remove the metal part off the radio trim, so that you would be left with just the plastic part.... take it to a body shop and tell them to fill the gap, that what i did to mines i took it to maaco told them what I wanted. They did a good job filling the half round circle then they painted it black and it looks good. it tried it out it clips on, I'm only having problems making that kit which will cover the gap around the radio. how did u do yours, what did u use?

never mind the how did u do yours question... actually I followed your method by using the Pontiac GTO 2004-2006 kit, and to tell u the truth i did a bad trimming job so one kit down to waste.... is there a better way to take measurements and then cut the kit?

I did my template out of thick construction paper/cardboard first. I also used the stock radio’s bottom curve to get the bottom right. I have an extra stock display, side metal trim pieces and lower dash part sitting on my work bench. That helps too.

i am going to use the original face from the stock radio and work from there filling in the gaps with fiberglass filler paste.

the hfl will work if you have a pioneer you can get the bluetooth adapter if your radio is capable of phone BT.
