there are many other subs that can perform as well if not better than the jl audio subs for lower prices. just because jl has a big name doesnt mean it has the best subs. resonant engineering, image dynamics, elemental designs, etc. are just a few off the top of my head. but more than sub, your box design is important for the type of sound quality you're lookin for.

JL is good, there are a lot of higher end stuff as well: Treo, Zapco, IDQ, Alumapro...you will pay a little or lot more, but the SQ is awesome. I have ZAPCO an it rocks!!!

i agree !! but JL in my oppinion is more spl oriented that still sounds good. but what im looking for is really pure SQ oriented subs, i dont need it to be crazy loud just loud enough inside of my car! And yes i think image dynamics is one of the better ones ! boston acoustics sound great and Infinity kappas are really good believe it or not.

If you are looking for SQ, FOCAL should be on the top of your list.

As mentioned above, the enclosure construction is critical to this. Small cubic feet of air space .80 or a little more will give you tight bass w/ better SQ. Larger cf will give you louder, boomier sub/bass. Mine is .85 with the Zapco R10B...specifically designed for SQ. Also, the amp is critical to SQ, you could have the best sub in the world with "dirty" power and it will sound like crap. My sub is over powered, 500 watt amp (Zapco) going to a 300 watt sub. Once you have the right sub, right enclosure, and the right power...all you have to do it get the whole thing tuned right and you are good to go.

IDMAX V3 ... Is SQ oriented and it gets plenty of loud!!!! Depending on the music you listen to, you should build your box .. like rock and punk sealed - reggae and rap ported .. if you want SQ dont go bandpass .. horrible

Also the RE

JL? Big name brand and people think is better than anything .. shame .. JL W7 should by far out performe every woofer out there for the price being that is like twice as much as any other speaker but it dont .. lol ..

I'm extremely happy with my two JL12W6s. As I get older I seem to lean toward the SQ rather than the SP. The W6 will give you both. Honestly, the quality of sound is awesome and I can't imagine ever needing anything louder. As it is I'm worried they're going to shake my car apart.

JL ROCKS with power. W7 will blow your glass off. If you are more interested in accuracy and not just making noise, I'd highly recommend the Infinity Kappa Perfect VQs. Check out the specs, they beat out most of the subs out there, and the price is right. I have em and I'm very happy.

If money is no object I'd also recommend Diamond Audio MacDaddys or the newer D9 series - I have two 10.4 MacDaddys and they take loads of power, hit hard and sound cleaner than most subs I've heard. Check 'em out.

dont wunna hijack but there are so many factors to consider wouldnt the only way to truly say a sub sounds better than another is to listen to each on in the same eaxact car with the same amp and same box? with subs being made in varying sizes that prevents that type of experiment. not to mention everyones hearing is different. and take the kappa perfect for instance they get down to 18hz i think but if the amp only gets down to 20 then that 18hz dosent matter right? correct me if im wrong.

IDMAX & Alumapro Alchemy RX > JL audio,

JL is more widely known, but if you search around any car audio forum, you will almost never see people competing in SQ scene with JL audio.

Focal should be a good option, but I dont have any first hand experience with focal's subs, hence I won't comment on them. I've tried IDMAX, RX and W6&7s before. My conclusion: the w7s are loud but not a good SQ sub, the w6s doesnt even compare to IDMAX or RX. (All the subs were sufficiently powered and properly tuned)

What would you recommend for a decent pricing subs. My range is around $500 max including amp and subs. I'm looking for something loud but not too loud..something maybe few houses can hear it. what would you recommend for a 2003 TL? and amps.

The W6 is the best compromise between SQ and SPL. It sounds better than all but the best dedicated SQ subs and will still get loud enough to rattle your teeth if you desire. I honestly doubt, unless you have a very tuned ear that you will hear any difference in quality between the W6 and IDMAX.
