'04 TL: 1/4" output from XM connector? Is there a cable available?

HI all,

I am a new TL owner looking to do my fist mod on an 04 TL without navigation...

After reading and searching the forums I have not been able to find an answer.

From what I understand, there is a way to get an aux input to the stereo through the XM connector.

I am not using XM on this stereo, so that would be great if a cable was available that I can plug in.

In one thread someone was talking about making your own. That thread was very old though, so maybe now there is a cable out there that I can buy.

Is one for sale somewhere? If anyone can help, please do. Thanks.

I forgot to mention that I will be sending the audio from a small mp3 player's 1/8 inch input (not 1/4 inch like I said before), so I need something simple.

I don't have or need an ipod, so this mod would be perfect.

do you mean you will be using the headphone jack?

If yes, you can get a variety of adapters that can work. There are a few cheap ones and some more expensive ones. The XM mod is a bit more involved and requires an adapter rather than making your own cable.

Cheapest:
Tape Deck adapter, you can buy one at radioshack for a few dollars and it goes into the tape deck. A wire sticks out and you can plug that into the headphone jack in your MP3 player. -> Very Good Sound Quality!

2nd Cheapest:
FM transmitter, you can get them for around 20 dollars and hook it up to the MP3 player. Just go to the radio preset and your done. -> Okay sound quality

The costly one:
You can get an adapter that plugs in the back of the radio. You remove the XM plug and plug in the adapter, then you plug the XM cord into the adapter so you can still have XM if you want. The adapters range from 50 dollars to 300 dollars depending on what you want.

A few adapters you can get are the USA-SPEC, DICE, PIE X3, iSimple, and so forth. All of these will have an ipod function and as well an AUX input. The sound quality is CD quality and VERY GOOD.

if you are on a budget I'd take the cassette adapter. If you can spend a bit more the adapter is a better option since in the future if you get an iphone or an ipod you can plug it in and have the ability to control it from the car.

Csmeance,

Thanks a lot for your reply...

Yeah, I meant a 1/8" jack. The jack that is commonly used for aux out on car stereos.

I can spend but would like to keep the costs down. I've been looking at this one:

What do you think?

I have seen some of the ones you listed. Gonna check out the rest. $50 - $60 is about my budget.

Installed the isimple. It was easier than I thought it would be. My only issue is that the volume on the auxiliary (the one I am using) is a little low.

Im trying to find a way to boost it.

Is the volume all the way at max on your iPod/MP3 player when it's hooked into aux?

Yeah, I made sure of that. Don't get me wrong, it's not THAT low. It sounds like you have the volume up to maybe 40 or 50%. Still low though.

Is it possible to put in a more powerful amp on the stock stereo?

Look into a line driver. You can boost the signal into your HU.
