Angry Yet Another Victim of Rim Theft in NJ

My rims and tires got stolen last night. Police came and think they may have got a partial finger print off the front driver's side quarter panel, but I'm not holding my breath.

Any recommendation on what to do? I called my insurance company to start a claim, but I mean, how do I get my car "down" without causing further damage. The officer suggested buying some cheap rims and tires in the meantime, but that seems like a waste of money (that won't be reimbursed). I've never had to file a claim on my insurance before, so I don't know what's the best way to handle it.

Pics below. Car is a 2008 NBP Type-S

what is it with these type s rims. Was it in front of your house? Bad enough they took the rims. Now you need new side skirts. Couldn't use extra milk crates to keep it balanced. Sorry. i hope they catch those guys.

File a claim because you also had some skirt damage, with a new skirt, rims and tires that's a descent amount to pay out of pocket.

This happened to me on my C6... Never again! Any nice semi-nice car I have, I use Gorilla's System. Every nut is a lock. Its like 50 bucks. Way cheaper than a deductible or new wheels.

sorry about that OP, that would make me cry. i have project mu 7-sided lug nuts (locks) on every stud for my wheels. theives can get around it but i might as well make it a PITA for them

you should get at least gorilla locks (the system) for your next set...honestly everyone should have at least have 1 lock on their wheels. the wheels aren't expensive but avoiding all the other damage and the hassle makes the locks worthwhile

Thanks everyone. I had a standard set of lock nuts on it, but that obviously didn't matter.

Ironic you say "time to move" Steven, my fiancé and I are planning to move next year. Can't come fast enough now!

I leave tomorrow and am going to be out of town all week for work, so it's going to be a headache getting this taken care of.

In the meantime, I'm trying to find some jack stands to support the car until I can get new wheels.

Damm that sucks man really. You don't have an aftermarket alarm system with sensitive shock sensor? That can scare them off.

The issue is that even if the thieves are caught, they'll be before a judge and get probation most likely and a fine (so no time in the cell), so there's no disincentive to steal. Too bad they don't get a bat to the back of the head- they deserve that more. Sorry to see this happen to you. Where in NJ did this happen?

All these TL-S wheel thefts remind me of the days when they would hack apart a 2G TL front end, just to get to the HIDs.

Happened in Bedminster, NJ. The neighborhood is nice, but that doesn't really have anything to do with it (it wasn't a neighbor who stole em. Haha).

I'm going to double up on the wheel locks this time, and will look into the tilt sensor/alarms you guys are mentioning.

I just got a quote on parts from the local Acura dealership: $3545
Hopefully insurance will give me that much or close to it, and I can order the parts from Delray Acura and not have to eat my deductible.

They stole mine off my TLS 4 years ago here in North Jersey, $7,000 to replace the wheels, tires & A-spec spoiler which were all crushed. My TLS NEVER goes to a shopping center.

Dont really need a tilt sensor; just the shock sensor. I did the diy mod and install it inside the steering whell cover attach to the column. Butt hey if you feel more secure with both there is nothing wrong with that.

I've been thinking on installing that viper autostart and security system. It alerts you of all right to your phone via satellite ..It will be a worth spend of $500.

Of course a tilt sensor would have been more beneficial in this case.

If you set the shock sensor to about 90% sensitivity it will go off if you try to jack up the car. I tested and so did my buddy. Like I said whatever floats your boat. Plus it benefits by also protecting the car i.e. window, door, etc bangs/break-in as tilt sensor only activates when its being raise.

There is a company in Florida IIRC, who sells add on shock sensors to factory alarm with the ability to alert via text without having a 2nd control.

I had a friend that had his M3 wheels stolen…twice. The bad guys knew where to look after he got hit the first time. Any way to get that TLS into a garage at night?

Sorry to see this OP. It seems like NJ is number one on the AZ list of thefts.

My area is relatively safe but I for sure wouldn't park it outside at night. I know how NJ is before I moved here. One of my main priorities in finding a place to stay was security for the car. I know most people are just happy if they have off-street parking. Not me, I pay extra, I know, but to me it's worth it. Car is garaged with secured access 24hr security and cams. OEM wheel lock on 1 lug doesn't mean much. My WORK wheel set has a lock on every lug. Nothing is impossible to beat, these are just deterrents. If someone REALLY wants to get past all that, they can have it. They worked hard for it, lol. Unless you're gonna drive a beater like most people, parking is an additional expense that needs to be factored in when getting a place in NJ. I feel like you'll just get new wheels and that doesn't stop you from being a target again. Years ago my friend's Integra got her car cinder-blocked twice within 3 months in Hempstead, LI. I told her to move. She bought a Corolla instead.

If insurance is reimbursing you for OEM wheels and tires that should be plenty of $ to work with even with your deductible. You should be able to find some wheels locally and be able to throw them on within a day. For the jack stands/jack check out Harbor Freight, there should be one near you. Not really the best quality stuff but cheap and gets the job done especially for ocassional use. They have a racing jack that's decent for only $60. Just use that with your factory jack and you can get your car off the blocks. That freakin milk crate those asses used is not gonna last and your car is not gonna be stable on that. You need to get that out as a priority because the rear right of the car can crash down with additional damage.

interesting you say that. I have mine set at or near 90% and it was going off like crazy Saturday night due to the rain.

I know it was that cause I was sitting in my garage with the door open cleaning my guns.

this def made me wary this weekend, i have an aftermarket alarm conneceted to my iphone also but have been locking the factory alarm while the car was in my driveway due to the air horn blasting when i armed the alarm (and waking up either my family or my nice older neighbors at late hours), BUT stopped doing that when i saw this thread. now my car sleeps either in my yard behind a big gate next to my BIGGER dog, but thats an inconvenience due to my tight driveway or i come home earlier and arm the alarm. smh

OP, its happening all over Jersey, My type s wheels were also stolen last November. I know the feeling trust me and thankfully I have my g35 to much around in until I was able to located some XXR 530. I live in the most desirable neighborhood of Linden, and thieves are coming over and still wheels. Just about 2 weeks ago they hit 2 cars a block away from me.

Not sure whats been done so far, but if you open a claim, you can have the insurance company send a tow truck to take it to a body shop. If theress any more damage from them loading it, it'll be covered by the insurance company. Id check the suspension for damage too. If theres even a scratch the insurance company is responsible. You might can get them to give an "appearance allowance" on it (A portion of the cost of the part for allowing the "damaged" part to stay on the car). That might cover some of your deductible.

Sorry to hear it. Good luck.

Hey everyone, wanted to provide an update in case anyone is interested.

I got the car onto jack stands before I went out of town. My insurance company sent a tow truck and picked it up yesterday. While getting it on the truck, it caused some additional damage which insurance is covering.
They ordered the rims and tires, and once they are on they're going to put it on a lift and inspect the undercarriage for any additional damage (and will be fixing everything).

I have to give props to Progressive, everyone I've worked with has been great and they're handling everything for me, which is awesome since I'm traveling for work this week. They scheduled a rental car for me when I get home so I'll have some wheels until my car is ready.

On a side note, did you guys know that there are 2 colors for the Type-S rims? The insurance adjuster called to ask which color I wanted. I was confused and told them to order the standard 10 spoke Type-S rim, so hopefully it's the right one? Never knew that.

Once I have the time, I'm going to look into the different options for upgrading my alarm. I'd rather not replace it, so adding a shock or tilt sensor would be ideal. Any recommendations are appreciated!

OP I mention it in my first post; google diy shock sensor acurazine. The sensor can be pick up at any electronic store i.e. Fry's (if you have any there).
