Yes another 6mt tranny fluid question.

Im picking up my 08 TL-S 6mt on tuesday morning its an out of state purchase but im confident with this one. In my search for a 6mt Type S I have driven a few of them and never once had an issue with the tranny or more specifically 3rd gear. Infact they all shifted and drove amazingly!!! My question is, even if the tranny shifts 100% perfectly in all gears (no grinding or popping out of 3rd), do you guys still recommend changing over the to the GM synchromesh fluid? This car will still be under the remainder of the factory warranty so even if there was a 3rd gear issue I can get it fixed, but assuming it shifts perfectly like the other cars I test drove do I bother changing the fluid out or leave it alone? basically if it aint broke dont fix it kinda thing...

Thanks guys.

James

So why in the heck start a separate thread? Good grief, you should just ask this in one of the other 10,000 threads on GM fluid.

Personally, I hope the mods lock this thread and direct you to one of the existing threads.

Sorry, but this forum is getting too cluttered because people do this stuff without thinking....

and yes, after feeling how smooth the 6MT shifts with this stuff, I would.

Seriously? your going to get mad that I posted a legit question? What are you talking about too cluttered?!? its a forum...did you want the same threads to sit on the top page for 10 days or something? I have been to sites like that and they suck.

Well whatever...mods if you need to delete this thread thats fine.

In the other threads that you read, what did you conclude to?

Honest question.

I would switch out the fluid to the GM syncromesh.

It made my shifting silky smooth.
Honestly, I would switch out the fluid on a car that didnt display any symptoms.

To back up my claim.....Since its a used car, you dont know how everything has been treated, ie: clutch, transmission, engine, brakes.

Why not drain all fluids and put in the best, including; true synthetic oil, new gear oil (GM SYNCROMESH) brake fluid, etc.

I'm sure your car would LOVE YOU.

I did not see anything that specifically mentioned changing out the fluid on a perfectly good working transmission. I only saw posts where someone claimed to have some issues going into 3rd then switching to the fluid with excellent results. On the cars I test drove I assumed they had the original fluid but they shifted very nicely. So like I stated is it worth my time and is it beneficial to the transmission to change the fluid even if it shifts like butter with the Honda fluid.

Alright thanks for the heads up so it sounds like either way going to this fluid is a good idea.

Thanks,

is it beneficial? The GM MAGIC juice is a better fluid than the honda MTF.
is it worth your time? come up with your own conclusion.

Car works great for "x" number of miles and then wears to the point that the trans shifts crummy. Replace trans fluid with GMSFM and problem goes away. In my mind it would be best to prevent the wear in the first place if possible to maximize the life of your transmission. $45 worth of fluid seems like cheap insurance to me.

I did.

I did my first drain and fill at 15,500 miles. The transmission was flawless and working perfectly, but I just wanted to ward off any potential future situations and since the Honda fluid was well known to be sub-par, the GMSFM went in.

Do it anyway. Though you didn't experience any issues during your test drives (neither did I), you may start experiencing the problem once you drive it extensively.

Alright thanks a lot for the input guys looks like I will be doing a fluid swap.
I know this info is also available in a simple search but what is the latest part number for the correct fluid and how many quarts do I need?
Sorry, thats the last tranny fluid question i will ever ask :-)

Thanks,
James

Dude, put forth a little effort and search...

In the time it took you to type that post, you could have run a search and had your answer.

Someone else posted the part number, you will need 3 quarts. The 6MT takes ~2.3 quarts. Do a search, someone has a decdent DIY with pictures showing you how to do it. You DO NOT need to remove the battery or air intake piping.

Make the switch, I tried both Honda's MTF, the GM is far superior. Using both Honda MTF's and had notchiness in 3rd gear that also occurred in 1st and 2nd as well. I never had any gear ever pop out.

The OP's question was a little different than whats available via search. As was mine when I asked. What do you gain by telling anyone to do a search ?
Why dont YOU do a search and see if you can find his EXACT question answered, instead of immediately coming down on people. Its uncalled for. Really.

A little late here but I would definitely do it. Even if it shifts great now it might shift even better with the new fluid. I'm curious to know the results.

Yeah looks like it cant hurt and only help things so I will give it a shot. I will see if I can find this stuff on ebay or something otherwise I will head over to a GM dealership and pick up a few quarts of it. I will definetely post up a before and after impression.
Thanks for all the input.

Sounds like using the oem fluid can/will eventually lead to premature gear failure... so you can either stick with the oem stuff until it breaks or do some pre-emptive maintenance to prevent the issue from ever happening to begin with.

For what it's worth, i just picked up an 04 tl 6mt and shifting great for the most part with some notching going into first and third "rarly".

Read some tranny posts and went to my local Chevy dealer and bought 3 quarts of FM. It made shifting feeling like butter.

2 weeks laters still silky smooth, do it and you wont regret it.

You should have kept reading, unless you got a great deal from the dealership. My local stealership wanted almost $18/quart. Needless to say I ordered from online.

yes, but you can infer by reading the other threads that the GM fluid is a much better fluid than Honda stuff.
All the info is present.

Great thanks for all the info guys I ended up ordering 3 quarts from gm parts online for only $8.83 a quart. I fly out to pick up my TL-S Tuesday morning and will change out the fluid first chance I get. Sounds like you cant go wrong with this fluid!!

14 bucks a pop at my local GM dealership.

I'd have to say i still have some notchiness in my shifting, especially into 2nd gear when the transmission's cold. I've read a crunchy 2nd is actually quite common while cold. I skip 2nd until it's warmed up.

Anyways. I've never had a 3rd gear pop out with other fluid, just changed it out as preventative maintenance.

Just finished swapping out whatever MTF fluid was in the tranny case with the GM Synchromesh. The original stuff had some flakes in it but I guess that was to be expected being that it was probably the original MTF from the factory.

It took about an hour to complete and the most difficult part was getting to the fill plug using a series of extensions and a swivel joint with enough leverage to break that sucker free. Good lord that thing was on tight.

The test drive afterward was about 5 miles long and mostly at low speeds so I could continually shift between 2nd and 3rd gears. I experienced no notchiness or 3rd gear gate rejections. So far so good.
