Wrong oil filter?

I was wondering what will happen if I used filter that's not made for my car. For example, a CL Type S filter?

Will it cause engine damage? Or is it ok? I think I read somewhere that ppl were using S2000 filters.

BTW, I thave a 07 TL type S. How about the TL filter for the type S. I noticed they(Honda) had different part numbers, but Purolator uses the same filter for both.

Thanks.

OK, since nobody has replied, let me ask the question another way.

My car's filter according to Purolator has a Relief Valve P.S.I. value between 14 and 18.

Would using a filter that has a Relief Valve P.S.I value between 12 and 15 cause problems for my engine?

Thanks.

No.
The valve only comes into play when the oil filter becomes clogged, and the pressure differential to oil flow is the PSI stated, then the relief valve will open.

People use the S2000 "PCX" filter because it has more filter media, and the components are of a higher quality. Member Road Rage thoroughly tested the S2k filter & found it to be perfectly fit for our TL's oil system. I'm thinking about switching to the S2k filters (from Mobil1) since there is a new Honda dealership nearby and they are cheaper...

Thanks guys for your input guys.

While waiting for some input, I started to read RoadRage's thread in the 3G garage, and the SHO oil/filter page. In the end, I was still a bit confused, and didn't know who/what was right.

I believe that RoadRage said the using a filter with different PSI value can be a problem because it will affect the overall oil pressure?

Someone else said that car manufacturer wouldn't rely on a cheap <$10 part to regulate the oil pressure, and it wouldn't cause problems.

What I noticed was that K&N use different PSI value compared to Purolator, and I wouldn't be surprised if other brand oil filters have different values as well. I wonder what the OEM PSI value is...?

Well, I ended up doing an oil change with the 2nd gen TL/CL filter because the guy sold me the wrong one, and by the time I got to it, the shop was closed. I couldn't wait because I had the oil drained already, and I had to drive to work the next day (Today). So far, no leaks, and no problems while driving. I haven't floored it yet because I'm still paranoid about F'ing up my engine. I guess I'll have to change the oil and filter sooner than my usual 5000 mi.

Thanks again guys for your input.

You're being paranoid for no reason. The oil pump has it's own mechanism to regulate pressure.

It's not like Jiffy lube stocks the exact, specific filter for the TL. They just use whatever filter with the same size diameter fitting.

Acura does not "require" you use Acura brand filters. You can use any filter, and you'll be fine warranty wise. If your engine siezed because of low oil pressure, Acura will be replacing your engine free. Oil pressure is not regulated at the filter. Acura would be pretty stupid to have some part they have no control over, regulate pressure. Especially in regards to a part they cannot legally require you to replace with an acura branded part.

Besides, you have a warning light in the dash for oil pressure. If the light is not illuminated, and the light is in correct working order. It can be interpreted that the oil pressure is within acceptable limits. Even if it went to court, you could argue that the oil pressure was not out of bounds due to any fault of yours, because the oil pressure light did not signal that. If it was indeed the case, the oil pressure warning system is defective, which prevented you from addressing the oil pressure, which means Acura is still liable for warranty repairs, because the warning system failed.

As turbonut so clearly stated, the internal filter valve is there to protect the filter media. It only reacts to the pressure drop from one side of the media to the other. It has nothing to do with the actual engine oil pressure. If the filter is so clogged that the pressure drops too much on the outlet side of the filter, the valve opens. If it didn't, at best the pressure would blow a hole in the filter media making it completely useless. At worst the media could tear apart and you would have pieces of filter media clogging up oil passages.

The psi rating has to do with the filter media, and that is why it's different from brand to brand (because filter media is different)...
