Window Tint Question

I am going to get tint on my 2006 TL Navi (Anthracite Metcallic) on Monday. After browsing around the threads, I have come up with some good information (i.e. - ceramic and moleskins), but I still have a couple of questions:

1) How does the rear window tint effect the use of the rear defroster?
2) How does the rear window tint work as far as the 3rd brake light goes? Do people tint "around" the light or just cover the whole window?

I am in Illinois where tint is technically prohibited on the front two windows. However, I think that I am going to go ahead and tint them anyway, but not as dark as the back two and the rear window.

What are people's experiences who have done it this way / would you do it differently if you had to do it over again?

Any other suggestions or (especially) pictures are welcome!

I have dark ass tint and can't see shit when I'm backing up at night. I even put in brighter reverse lights and it doesn't help too much.

You should make sure the rubber around the 3rd brake light sits flush with the inside window after tinting - otherwise some of the light reflects off the inside of the glass.

I have not noticed any interference with the capabilities of the rear defroster.

What I would do differently - have the tint guy cover the entire rear quarter window instead of being a pansy and not pushing the tint under the rubber.

i'm in schaumburg...

i went 35% all the way around. i too wish the tint guy covered the entire rear quarter window instead of being a pansy and not pushing the tint under the rubber. no problem with the rear defroster. if i'm not mistaken, they tinted around the brakelight...i'm extremely satisfied either way

I did 30% Llumar ATR Charcoal (metallic) all around and love it. They didn't go under the brake light or under the rubber on the quarter windows and I'm unhappy with both. The metallic interferes with AM reception (don't care) but I haven't noticed any diff with the Navi. No probs from the cop that pulled me over for speeding in PA. I'm doing moleskin soon.

Got any pics?

The metalic look never caught my eye, but if this is less noticable maybe my viewpoint may change.

My bad. My tint doesn't look metallic. It contains metal to better reflect the sunlight. The tint looks greenish which I'm told is how the good stuff is supposed to look.

I mentioned it because some people have problems getting the GSM signal for the Navi to pass thru the tint tho I have had no such probs. The metallic version reflects more sun and therefore causes less heat and damage to the interior. The black vinyl on the door gets warm but never hot.

Your tint shop will have samples from each mfr to choose from.

I have 30% ceramic tint and mole skins for my ride since i got navi

1. Still works.
2. Still works where they cut out the shape for it.
3. I wish i would of got 15% all way around.

Good luck

hmmm...based on research, the metallic based tints were the cause of radio frequency interference, including the GPS. The way to go is ceramic based tints which have no metal at all, such as Huper Optiks which are more resilient to heat, in turn, keeping the car cooler. Also, ceramic based tints are not color-dyed which gives it a more professional look vs. the blue, purple, green tints...(no offense anyone). I got my Ceramic Plus tints here in Santa Monica, CA (Los Angeles County) for $350 (light in front and medium in back). Looks awfully clean if you ask me. I'll post up pics once I detail the car. Just got it the tints applied yesterday so I'm going to give it one more day before I take the pics.

Just make sure to ask the tint guys to do the following,

1) put the tint under the rubbers for the rear quarter windows...looks really tacky when they don't do it.

2) If possible, remove the third brake light, apply the tint on the entire back window and then put the brake light back on. (not quite sure if this is legal though)

Did you have them tinted in Schaumburg? Your location says Streamwood? Whats the name of Co. that tinted? HOW much and how good did they do? What color tint? Why didn't you get 50%?

Smile Window Tint

My car is registered and Licensed in Virginia where the following rules apply:

Back WINDOW: 35%
Rear Windows: 35%
Front Windows: 50%

However I live in Central New Jersey where cops are pretty strict

I have 5% limo tint on the entire rear of my car. I have 20% on the front two windows. I have yet to get pulled by the cops for tint anywhere and the cops in Va Beach are bored as ever... at night the front two windows appear to be limo. I'm considering changing my front to limo as well, but I know for a fact I'll get pulled for my tint. I don't care though, it's all about the looks... However, if you decide to put limo on your front windows, you must remember to use extreme caution because it can be quite difficult to see out at night.. I have this visibility problem even with 20% makes navigating on city streets a bit tricky.

If you don't have a navigation unti installed, I suggest going no darker than 35%.. If a cop pulls up next to you at night and can't see inside your car then this is when you're going to get pulled. You have to understand it's for their safety that they want to be able to see inside your car.. With a navigation unit, even in night mode this produces just enough light for others to see inside your car... Still can't see very much but it's better than nothing.

Good luck with your tint job. As for the back window, have them remove the tail light and tint the entire window. You're tailight will lightup just fine through the tint, regardless of what shade you get!

you got pics? i was thinking of doing 5% rear and 20% fronts on my tl-s but i was scared it would look funny. i gotta go light front cuz my 5% tint on my cl got me a couple ticket's not to mention all the times i got pulled over.i'm in north NJ and certian areas(cranford/roselle park etc) where the crime rate is -10 the cops are beasts when it comes to tints.thats how they get their arrests, they pull you over for tints, then your car "smells funny",next thing you know their ripping your car apart.........

Blazinginder - Yes, I bought it from Precision! Why do you ask? I'm assuming maybe you have seen my whip at the dealership or have passed me somewhere in the area... Well if I was driving, I was probably passing you doing about 90, lol.

Subbuzz - I'll have some pics up soon. I have been too busy with work to have a chance to post pictures.. I drive to work alot which is actually in north jersey (hoboken) and I haven't had any trouble with the cops..(yet). It might be because of the VA plates though that they leave me alone. I think 20% looks great and at night it looks like limo. with the stock navi you can see good enough inside and cops have stopped next to me with no issues. I'm actually considering getting the front windows de-tinted friday and then re-tinted with 5% just for the hell of it.. I will already be at the shop because i'm having the rubber removed from my rear 1/4 panel windows and having the tint placed under the rubber. My shop in va made a mistake and I just don't have the time to drive 6hrs to have them repair it so they refunded me a bit.

Personally I don't care if I get pulled for window tint and quite honestly, having 5% on the rest of my windows is illiegal (atleast in va where the car is registered) so i'm already risking a ticket. I might as well break the law in style, lol!

Later all... I'll get the pics up soon!
