if the shop doesn't know what moleskin is.... go elsewhere... some places will literally cut the weather molding with a razor blade so that it doesn't scratch the tint... it is fine if you cut it... BUT... and I mean BUT you will get some horrible wind noises if they do... SO INSIST ON MOLESKIN

Also make sure they tint the whole rear quater window (not leave a 1/8th or 1/4 inch gap).
They should also tint UNDER the high mount rear brake light for the cleanest look.

I had the 3M carbonized window tint applied, no metal-for nav/detector. The problem is some scratches. I bought the mole skin option here. Although the dealer/service warned me the warranty would be void. Reason- the mole skin makes the track tight and can drag the motor, leading to burned out window motor. Any advice/suggestions. The kit does little sitting in the bag! I have a 07 TL/S. R

Might I suggest not telling the dealer and just removing the moleskin if the motor burns out
what they don't know won't hurt. Before you say, well they will see it when they service it... just get the window fixed at another dealer.

Any thoughts on the generic? moleskin applied by the shop or having the moleskin made and sold by tintprotector? Is one actually better than the other? The one by tintprotector says it won't come off as quickly therefore no smeared glue or early scratches, but i want to know about some actual experiences..

I've owned nearly 15 vehicles through the years and have had all the windows tinted with Madico 5% tint (minus windshield) of every vehicle I have owned.
My recent purchase is a 2008 TL which I am planning to have tinted with 35%. However, this is the first time I have heard about the moleskin. I've never had an issue with the tint getting scratched before (but then again I only keep vehicles for two to three years). Are other people seeing a problem with their tint getting scratched enough to make the moleskin necessary, or is it just used as a precaution?
Thanks!

The moleskin is for all TL's 04-09. Sometimes glue does streak the windows, especially if it's hot outside. This can be cleaned off with Goo Gone and then your favorite glass cleaner. A lot of people have had scratches.

I got my windows tinted on my 2008 tl-s as soon as i got the car last april and they used the 3M tint (supposedly needed it because of the nav screen) but anyway the tint has scratch lines in all 4 windows. You can actually put your nail in the scratches and feel them. I would use the moleskin as a precaution. or tell the guy that if they scratch, hes gonna hafta rip them off and do them again. haha.

For those looking to install the moleskin to protect their tint, make sure you do it after you have the tint done. Make sure you wait a few days for the tint to cure though. I did mine before getting my first tint job done and found that when they press the tint down along the bottom of the windows it can pull up the upper edge of the moleskin and you'll end up with glue streaks.
I re-did the moleskin on a couple windows afterwards and didn't have any problems with glue streaking. Had to have the tint redone after getting a ticket and now have the same problem so I have to get back in there and clean things up.

I've had my tint for almost 3 years now and so far so good without moleskin. there are fine scratches but not noticeable unless you are trying to find them. the film is formula one pinnacle I remember.

I recently had my TL tinted as well. did not go with the moleskin, everytime i wash the whip i open the windows all the way donw, i run a wet microfiber cloth along the inside of the window seal and it grabs all the dirt out of the seal, which usually is not alot. The moleskin will ad to the work you window motors will have to do, thus I think will reduce the life of the motor. But I ve heard many say the moleskin is the way. If you live in a hot place like florida, the heat may effect how well the moleskin stays on your door. Just somethings to think about. Hope this helps.

I got mine tinted about 18months ago. It was 3M film. I didn't apply the moleskin. I have very few fine scratches. So far I am happy with the results.

Just bought a 08 TL type S, already tinted all the way around. Didn't notice it until after I bought it, but all of my windows are scratched. I had never had problems with other cars I had tinted so I knew there must be some explanation and with a quick google search found this thread and forum. I love the car, just wanted to know what the consensus is now. My option is live with it, remove it, or go to a tint shop and have my tint removed and have the moleskin or whatever applied. I live in the DFW area, and would really like to fix the problem, but if it is just going to scratch again don't really care to spend them money and just have my windows scratch again.
