Why 0-60 is a useless meaure
Everybody is always talking about 0 to 60. Whats the use? 60 is not the speed limit anywhere anymore! Speed limits go 55, 65 and 75. So why 60? You can't drive 60 in town either usually its 25, 35 or 45. Why is 60 a magic number?? My car will do 60 in just below 6 seconds or 5 or 4! Who cares?? My car will go 150 who cares? Essentially nobody ever drives over 85 when you say you've driven over 100 in a public road people say "the horror, the horror! If you hit a tree at 70 or 100 its immaterial your dead anyway, 100 might be better since it greatly reduces your chances of becoming quadraplegic!! If its such a horror the government should limit the speed cars can attain to 75, that way we could lay off half the dimwit cops that spend most of their giving speeding tickets. That would probably solve the deficit!! Or just get rid of the stupid speed limits and ticket drivers for real problems like hoging the left lane, driving like and idiot in adverse weather conditions, talking on a cell phone and drunk driving. Furthermore, I think we sould all drive in the nude that would probably keep speeding way down but accidents may increase who knows? I guess sometimes I ramble.
The scary thing is your right. This is funniest thing I have heard in awhile.
Here is a true story. Last year the community I live in had a meeting with the police department about a street that has a speed limit of 45 (the poilce never monitor traffic on this road). A minority of home owners wanted the police to set up speed traps because people were exceeding the speed limit and they felt it was hazardous. One Poilce capitain explained that if they just lowerd the speed limit to 40. The poilce could give out more tickets, His rational was,it would be easier to control traffic the lower speed limit.. I Don't get it .
The result they ended lowering the speed limit. To this day I have only ever seen one cop doing traffic on this street and it was 1 day. I drive on this road every day and I still speed.

You have to practice (and "abuse" your car) to get the 0 to 60 times magazines report, and as already said, it is not relevant to normal everyday driving. What would be more relevant is something like 30 to 55 in 3rd gear...which my TL (M6) does in just under 4 seconds (.29 g)...which is a gear you might already be in in traffic and need to quickly pass or whatever. Comparing something like that (figure out what would make sense for the type of driving you do) rather than 0 to 60 times might have more value.

And it's been around forever, just like the 1/4 mile, and using it allows us to compare test results over the years. I'd hate to see it changed.
On the other hand, real races (on a track or on the street) are time-to-distance in nature, so time-to-speed really doesn't tell you how two cars will fare in a race.
