Mrs. Jhumbo is also short and has the same problems. She has trouble when getting in too because she can't reach the door after sitting unless she starts to pull it in before getting into the car all the way... but that makes the door smash into her as she's getting in.

For me, the doors seem just fine.

Yeah, the doors suck. My girlfriend and other girls that get in my car (don't tell my GF) hate the doors. Of course they love the rest of the car and it makes up for it.

I've learned to work around it, but when I'm getting out of the car with lots of stuff in my hands, it always seems to want to slam back into me. I guess if that is the worst thing about my car, I can deal with it. It is sometimes fun to flip open the door, hop out, and never have to shut it as it does it automatically.

You guys need to read this thread-almost the same conversation, but not as much complaining going on.

+1, always hated it when it closes back up on me. The worst experience i had with it was when i picked up my wifes auntie and when she got out, it slammed really hard on her leg.

ahhhh ur right i guess this is a issue with the TL doors if extra weight is added to the doors and to the trunk lid to help assist it close i would like to know how to remove these weights because i dont like the balance on the doors or trunk

HaHa, I'm really glad to read this thread and find out that its not just my doors! Every time I'm getting out with my hands full the door tries to slam into me, I've just learned to lower my shoulder and take it

Aren't our hinges slanted or something to help "assist" the door to close. My passengers only have a problem with it sometimes, but i don't get too many complaints. It's never happend to me. You'd think that after you drive a car for a while you would figure out how to prevent the door from slamming on you.

As for the trunk closing on it's own, thats a new one. Maybe you should try opening it all the way. Only time it closes on its own is on an incline.

Yes the doors are pretty ridiculous. If you don't specifically set it in one of 3 (that's right there are 3 positions not 2), it will shut back on you EVERY time. This happens weather it's on level ground or a steep driveway. My wife has been complaining about this since she started driving it all the time.

In fact the return mechanism is so strong, I would bet it would still close back on you if you were backed up into the driveway... lol

Still a great car and I wouldn't trade it for anything...

Its a Honda thing. Accords do the same thing. Just plain annoying. I love how they swing open further and smack others if you dont pay attention. Definitely stupid.

There's no return mechanism on these doors. It's just balance. I've never had a car that you could just fling the doors open. i thought it was normal to use your arm to set the door in one of three positions and then it stays there. It's easy, grab ahold of the verticle handle, open it, let go, done.

Being one of the OG 3G's in this forum, I have to say... this "feature" just sucks. Other than rattles in the car, it's probably my 2nd biggest complaint about my '04 that I've had since October 2003. I'm about to go on 7 years of that damn door nearly chopping my leg off. I remember one time, after it nearly chopped my legs off, saying "this is what I get instead of ventilated seats? Christ!"

I've got calluses so thick on my legs now people ask me "You do muay thai kickboxing?" ... "No, I own a damn 3G Acura TL!"

Ok, I keed I keed... but it's pretty annoying.

Yea my TL-S has this issue and I hate it as well. But our 09 does not have this issue and has really firm holds. Wonder if their is a way to take the ones off the 09 and put them on the 3rd gen? Hmm...

I don't know if you have this problem but my doors always get slammed by passengers. When I close the driver's door I barely pull the handle and then it closes itself. When getting in especially in the winter I'll open it and sit down quickly and let it close itself. I'm 6'1" and it's not too hard to "beat the door". In the beginning I've gotten my shin caught in the door but I have so much built up calus (sp) on my shins it wasn't too bad.

I love the doors but they work exactly the same as my 95 Legend so I guess i'm used to the self closing doors. It will get worse once I get done with the complete tear down and sound deadening!

This topic has been discussed before back in 2006 and was deemed a "feature."

I personally love them. Friends bitch about them a lot though.

most deffinately passengers always swing it closed hard! sometimes i have the window down a bit and it makes this sound that makes me think the window is going to shatter people dont realize since these doors are so closely balanced to close easily they dont need to slam them shut... so annoying!

I'm with you. i LOVE the fact that my doors close for me like that. it's one of the "features" i like most about the car. And as far as having heavy doors, i wouldn't have them any other way, especially when it comes to aftermarket speakers and the higher pressure/vibration they create. my heavy TL doors dont vibrate a bit and sound great with my mbquarts, my 97 prelude on the other hand has very light doors and such has more door vibrations and poorer sound. i have to always provide more closing force to make sure the prelude is closed up tight, not my TL.

I paid special attention to the way I get in and out of the car yesterday because I really don't notice anymore.

I get in by popping it open with the handle then pull it open to the first stop by the top of the door near the rubber seals. This way I don't put too much force on the handle. Then I get in and just nudge the door closed with a couple fingers on the handle and let go and the door does the rest.

Opening from inside the car is about the same. I push it open with the inside handle to one of the stops and get out. Then barely nudge it shut at the outside door handle to close it.

When I'm in a hurry and in a large space such as at home, I'll open it a little harder without stopping it at one of the stops and get in and it normally shuts itself.

I've got one friend in particular that slams the crap out of it every singe time he gets in. I yell everytime he reaches for the door to remind him not to slam it. I think he just doesn't have the coordination to not slam it.

I love my friggin doors.

The other day, I approached with burrito in one hand and 50 gal. barrel soda in the other... opened the driver side door with my teeth... did the one, two leg shuffle... in the car I was - right before the door automatically shut behind me. Sweet!

Son, shuffle ya feet a little faster next time - otherwise, open the door the old fashion way.

Ehhh. Just went from a Subaru Impreza (owned 3yrs) to my TL. The door on the Subee was a feather compared to the TL. Friggin thing has nearly smacked me in the face a few times when I don't place it into position very intently.

I had the same door problem on my 2G TL-S. So I'm used to it, but was hoping the problem would be fixed on the 3G!

I'm really good at doing the "soda shuffle" as well. And I doo appreciate the automatic doors when it's pouring down rain.

These two posts make me wonder what the size of the average TL owner is. I can push the door to the first 2 stops easily from the seat.

The other thing, these doors are the lightest of any car I've owned. Very light doors. Again I have to wonder about the size of the average TL owner of these doors are considered heavy.

I'm 5'9'' and about 165 lbs so its not like I'm a really overweight person or a real small/slender person either. It just happens to be they are difficult sometimes. After having the car for awhile though, you and others are right, you get used to the weight of the doors and compensate as need be. I haven't had the door slam on my leg in over a year now but none the less it happened.

If someone's sitting on your passengers, you should be more concerned about stains on the back seat.....
