Where is the milage recorded

I was driving down the rt. 31 when I saw a ssm 04 tl for sale for $26k. The paper said it had 17k miles, but I highly doubt that just by looking at the paint. Since there is an acura dealer close by there, is it possible for them to determine the acutal mileage rather than just reading his odometer?
Seems kinda fishy...
Maybe ill call the guy tommorow when I get some time.

Why not just ask the guy/gal who is selling it (I'm assuming a private party) where he got the car serviced and then have him produce records of service. Any time the car was in for service, the mileage would be reflected. You could further check with the actual service shop and ask them to run a history for you as well with the owner's consent. If he/she wants to sell the car, that would be a no brainer.

Odometer fraud is not taken lightly in most states.

No...odometer fraud is NOT taken lightly. However, it is almost impossible to pull off any more either. It's possible...but highly unlikely by the average consumer. Pull a carfax and see if there are any mileage discrepancies that show up.

It is faded in some spots which leads me to believe that he had an accident. It is also pitted I guess you can say from sap or rain..

I am thinking that he may have changed out the odometer or all of the gauges together, is that possible? Carfax wouldnt show anything if he had 2 of those gauge assemblys. Do you think it is possible for the dealer to find out the actual mileage? The guy that is selling the car said that he changed his own oil, and that I can take it to the dealer to get "checked up".

I am kind of leaning away from even looking at this car, something must have happened to it.

I have heard of people changing the entire instrument cluster, with a salvage, I would be afraid the the ECU would through a code showing that it had been disconected...?????

If the car was off when he did it, then it wasnt getting any power so I guess he could unplug it without having thrown a code?

the ECU also stores the mileage, so unless he had both changed, the edu would still have the original mileage.

I guess if I took his car to the dealer they could tell me. How do you know about the ecu?

so where in the paint does it give you reason to beleive that the milage is wrong. it sat in the sun too long near a tree. and maybe had an accident. there isnt and looks like the front end got stuck behind a dump truck dumping rocks????????

My old integra with 140k miles paint was better than this cars paint. It just didnt look right, I cant put my finger on it...

Anyway, I guess that I wont get a closer look just because if there are any warranty issues...
