When shifting from Drive to Reverse Noise?
#2
Do you hear the same noise every time you switch to Drive (from park or reverse)? It should be normal as it's engaging the gear. If it's more then just a 'thump'...like a griding or something else, then it's a problem.
If you are worried about it take it to a dealer.

Well if Acura is trying to compete with the big boys like BMW and Mercedes they shouldn't show they are cutting corners under the skin. My old 540i NEVER does that. Every control, knob and lever is slick, durable and precise. You use reverse gear everytime you drive a car everyday, I don't think it's picky at all to think the clunk is irritating. You can make a car look fancy and techno on the outside but it's under those panels that you learn how they sell these cars cheaper. Still love my TL don't get me wrong it's durable, it's efficient hands down best value, but I'll put up with another unreliable BMW one day.

ive been on this forum for a month now and honestly, not be try to be an asshole or something but i have never heard of so many whiny crybabies in my life. complaining and nitpicking about every little detail.
i mean, im anal with details but some of you people take it to a new level.

LOL, I don’t think complaining about a noticeable “clunk” noise when shifting to reverse in "whining". It would be different if I heard it on all the cars I’ve driven, but this is the first.
Give me a break, so a 30K+ car should make rattles/noises? Sorry, that’s unacceptable. These noises ARE NOT normal, bottom line.
If you don’t like our “whining”, it cost you nothing. Pay us No mind.

I find it amazing that people find it acceptable for a $35K car to have rattles and clunks. My $12K saturn had no rattles til it was 9 YO and even then it was only for 1-2 mins til the car warmed up. The last vehicle I had that had rattles was a mid 70"s dodge van....I realize that the people here who have rattles are a very small minority of TL owners, but I wouldn't settle for rattles or clunks in a $35K car or $27K car or $15K car. Rattles and clunks are not normal or acceptable as far as I'm concerned.

Well most TL owners (90%) are regular commuters that just fuel up and change the oil. I wouldn't imagine most of them to either notice or care about much that goes on with their cars unless it was major. I think most of us on this forum are enthusiasts and that puts us in a category most outsiders would term as 'anal'. We can't help but analize (pun intended) and scrutinize everything. I don't think many people would notice the driveline vibration that irritates me everytday. There's not too much to do but accept these as characteristics of our vehicles.....oh yeah and vent our frustrations here, forgive us. We just want someone who relates to us to hear us or maybe offer a solution (if there is one) We know acura has a reputation for attention detail so here's something we think they missed. I loooove this car, really the best I've owned. There's just room for improvement with these small details.

In a car that is soo good a something this small will glare out as something bigger; hearing that CLUNK EVERYday. Obviously I have no idea how bad / what your TL's sound like but my 04 AT makes a slight click/clunk when shifting from D to R or visa verse as well. Is this a problem on my TL? No..
Darn near every AT car will have some form of "noise" when changing from forward to reverse etc.. You have to remember when doing so you are completely changing the load and direction of near all moving parts/gears in the trans and drive-train. You also have quite a bit of valving etc. that can exhibit noise. When new, the clearances between these parts are at their least. Once you get several thousands of miles they are worn to where they tend to stay for the majority of the cars life. This "clearance" is completely normal and necessary for proper operation. Some noise is bound to occur when the "slack" is taken up.
Sure, some cars "muffle" this noise better than other but it's a byproduct of a mechanical device that puts a lot of torque and power to the road... If you think yours is/sounds excessive then definitely have your dealer check it out and or express your concerns.
