When to change oil?

My 06 TL is about 5 months old and I have less than 2K miles on it (work is only a mile away!).

When should I change the oil on the car? I used to change the oil in my old car at 3 month or 3000 miles...should I follow that rule?

Generally, most of us go by the indicator in the display located next to the steering wheel. it has an 'oil life' meter that is assumed to go by the total rotations of the motor, so it adapts a BIT to your driving style.

I just changed my oil after 5600 miles and the MID by the gauges read 20% left.

And if you want to change the oil yourself, here's a link to get rid of the change oil msg.

Put more miles or your car- driving it 1 mile will attract moisture into the engine that never gets hot enough to burn off.
Change the oil more often under these conditions

If your car is new and have never done an oil change yet, you better not change it until the MID tells you to.

There is another thread with the same topic.

Acura puts in some special chemicals into the oil for breaking in the engine and it says do not change the oil until the MID tells you to.

It even says it in the owner's manual.

Note the OP is driving under what the book calls SEVERE conditions
Less than 5 miles per trip is hellish on the oil

I came from the "old school" where you changed your oil every 3500 mi. or 3 mos. With that in mind, I talked myself into waiting until 5k miles for my first change in the TL. The dealer said there was no problem with this (Surprise - surprise!!). I know he is as interested in getting as many miles out of the car as I am ( ). Anyway, I am waiting until the display drops to ~20 % to change the oil for the second time.

So I guess the consensus is to wait until the MID drops below 20%...

I get a good deal on the oil change service at my Acura dealer...when I do get the oil changed, should I go with what they provide? Is there a better oil I should have the dealer use?
