wheel lock key

A couple of weeks back my '04 TL had a tire puncture and I realized that I had misplaced the wheel lock key. So, I had the car towed to the dealer who put the spare tire on it. At the same time, I ordered the wheel lock key through the dealer, who said they'll get the key in a couple of weeks. Today it is more than 2 weeks and I've been driving the car on the spare tire.

When I called up the dealer today, they said if they don't get it by Monday, they'll have to re-order it (which probably means another couple of weeks of wait).

I called up Costco (which is where I'm going to get the tires replaced) and they said they can't change the tires unless they have the key.

So ...
1. who makes the wheel lock key? Is it Acura or some other company? The dealer seemed to suggest some other company.
2. has anybody been in this situation? how long did it take to get the wheel lock key?
3. what are my options? I definitely don't want to have brand new tires on without the wheel locks.

Thanks.

I think the locks are made by a company called McGard. They can send you a key if you have the serial # which I think is on the package the locks came in. The # might also be somewhere in your paperwork. I had to order one once for another car.

If that doesn't work for you, an independent tire shop can remove the locks or cut them off for you. Might (should) have to prove that it's your car.

Yes, McGard makes the locks and they are $50.43/$37.82 for the set:

If you have the ID/registration number, which you probably don't, the key is $14.99 directly from McGard.

Acura dealers usually have the locks in stock, and as stated in a previous thread, the dealer has a master key which can be used to remove the locks, then you can install the new set.

Your dealer was pretty dumb. When they put the spare on, they should have put a regular lug nut on instead of putting the locking lug nut back on, and then you could have replaced the spare anytime you wanted to.

Go back and have them take off the locking nut and put a regular lug nut on. There's no need to buy a whole new set when you can just get the wrench. Ask the dealer for the key code and you can order it from McGard yourself and tell the dealer to keep the one he ordered.

that's strange. your dealer should have had PLENTY on stock. they are pretty much a walk-in item. i lost mine and went to my dealer for a new one. they took a small ACURA box out to my car, matched the key to the lock, ended up being a "green" lock key, purchased it (about $15) walked out. took all but about 5 minutes.

Stock wheels?
Have them replace all of the locking ones with regular lug nuts, then take those locking ones for a long heave off a short pier.
I had the dealer take them off of my car, but mine's parked in a garage at night and the lot where I work is gated.

Thanks folks for your replies.

The dealer was quite willing to sell me a new set of wheel locks and key, but that would have cost me $60-$70 plus installation, where as ordering just the wheel lock key for the existing locks would cost me $25 (actually, he first said it would be $15 and then upped it to $25). Now after 2 weeks, he says they haven't got the key yet and if they don't get it by Monday, they'll have to re-order it. I think the dealer is just putting me in a spot to purchase a new set.

I checked the wheel lock package (from McGard) that I had got when I first bought the car. They have all the information for me to order it by phone. In fact, they had included a re-order form and it says the cost for the key is $10.

I'm planning to call them up on Monday and re-order a key in any case. If my dealer doesn't receive the key by monday, I'll ask him to cancel the order and refund.

And the dealers wonder why you don't visit parts and service on a regular basis!

Guess I'll just have to raise heck if something goes wrong with mine that requires a 'good will' repair. I refuse to build up good will by over paying for parts and/or service Thought I did that by buying a few cars from them. (End of rant)
