my sales man said that it wasnt nesesary, but i tend to doubt him on that. maybe someone here has something that they go by and seems to work... Unfortunatly for me 6MT was way to tempting after I got the car, and with canyons 10 min away from me... well its history now.

When you get the owner's manual, it is on page 164.
In case you don't get one, the break-in period is 600 miles.
You should avoid full throttle starts.
You should avoid hard braking.
You should not drive at the same speed all the time.

the manual says 600 miles breakin, no specifics but the basic no full throttle and jack rabbit starts. also no heavy braking until after 200 miles. dealers tend to say alot of things but from what i learned most know jack shit about the car. i would follow the manual, 600 is not alot of miles.

Break-in period --> gas mileage improves
I've had my 04 TL since October 2003 and have about 9-10K miles on it so far - the car feels much smoother, gets better gas mileage under the same driving conditions and has developed a particularly annoying rattle (glove box area). So its good and bad news I suppose. Regarding the gas mileage, I'm not sure if its due to the temperature or engine break-in. When I first got the car I was high-teens on average. Now I'm mid 20's mpg on average. Not shabby even with hard driving, auto trainy and aggressive manu-auto shifting. The rattle is killing me though. Surfing for similar posts now. Hope this is helpful.

Historically I pretty much baby a car for the first 500 miles or so they slowly start getting more aggressive until about 1k miles, at which time I drive the car normally, which for me still isn't too aggresively.
