I'm a network engineer, my husband's a software developer. Two geeks in the family...
Both our cars were long paid off and we saved up quite a bit and decided we were ready to buy a $35k car. We still wanted to make sure we had enough left to take lavish vacations and start our family in the next few years.

28/family biz-restaurant man. 60k- a bit sidetrack from my studies. no bills, no credit cards, only 9K left in undergraduate loans. I have been putting money aside for law school (next fall). Tuition is pretty darn expensive.

I'm 21, a DJ, IT Contractor, Student (I wish they were paying me to be in class :-\)
As for contracting, I'm currently working with a government funded housing developer, setting up computer networks in housing projects and workin on a series of classes to help under-priveledged kids get a leg up with all this new-fangled technology.
I also paid cash, mostly from investments.

2nd year University/College student! make $10000 a year doing various labor. put 87 gas and it's all I can afford. I never dine out cuz I can't afford. sounds funny but it's a fact. Insurance paid by parents. I could be the youngest TL/Nav owner on the planet without dealing illegal stuff or money given from parents.

talk about tuition and textbook -> 10k a year
on top of car payment

I could work full time and make more $$$ like some kids do, but in a long run it hurts.

Also you need to consider the fact working in Canada, you make less.

Electrical Engineer for Boeing Aerospace, on the KC-767 Tanker program.

I'm 25, and full coverage insurance for the TL, the wifes mustang, and then just liability and PIP on the Maxima, comes to about $150-$160 figured monthly.

as for people who say

".... one question i've got for all these guys that have no payments and make over 100k a year is why are they settling for a mid-class luxury sedan, when they could easily afford a high end luxury sedan???"

I see where they are coming from, however, i think maybe they (and anyone/everyone else for that matter) should read "The Millionaire Next Door"

This whole thread seems in poor taste to me. Just my opinion. (at least when people get specific about their salaries)

This car is a 3rd car for me, and I love it.

you make about $800 a month and you spend $500 of it on a car (not including gas and mods)? I know you're only 17 but you should get your priorities straight. it seems that every dime you make goes into that car. soon you will have nothing to show for your income. I like a nice cars like everyone else here, but I am not going to put all my income into any depreciating asset.

By the way you may pay for your car, but you would be riding public transit or walking everywhere if you werent living at home.

I agree. I read it and almost didn't buy the car. I do however use it for work and we can't be practical the time can we? I get to write it off and will depreciate it down to nothing and still try to keep it for a while. It is very important to get priorities straight before spending a lot of unnecessary money on transportation. The car does not define me, I like nice tools that aren't a lot of trouble and that I can afford to repair or replace when necessary. An Accord or Camary would have done the job but I feel better with the TL and it didn't hurt.

My experience and observations with European cars has not been very good.

Yes, it's a decent book, and points out lots of true statements. I went back and forth with the idea to buy a used one, but considering the used ones would only be at most 1.5 to 2 years old at most (if that), and considering the low amount of depreciation the TL has, it wouldnt have saved me all that much to buy an 04 with 20,000 miles, so i figured I might as well have the "feeling" of owning a brand new car, as this is my first new car, as well as the first car I've actually ever had to pay for...

I still have my 92 maxima SE that my parents bought used for me a while back, which by the way is an awesome, yet underappreciated car, when i say underappreciated i mean in terms of respsect from people on non-maxima boards... people dont realize how quick it is, and how well it handles, how many amenities it has, etc). I don't think it's all that much slower than the TL, and all I've done to it is advanced the ignition timing a good bit, and in intake... and the MT is a very nice feeling/shifting MT, with LSD too... sorry, I'll get off my soapbox about the maxima

Wow... small world!! At first it would seem like everyone wasn't a porn star... now it seems almost everyone is. j/k

High-class sedan isn't me, I prefer high end 2 dr (FUN CAR) and a mid-class sedan. The 2 dr coming up soon tho.

This post was on the preceding page but it appears certain people, whose posts are being deleted, didn't notice it, so here it is again.

I have just deleted 4 more posts because they were off topic. The subject of this thread is "what is your occupation/how do you afford the TL?", and that is all we want to know.

No arguments.
No rants.
No lengthy discussions on your opinion of another posters post.

From now on, any posts that stray off topic, or are argumentative or abusive, will be summarily deleted with no warning or notice.

If you can't find your post, you probably qualify under this criteria. If you feel you have been wrongfully accused, send a PM to one of the 3G moderators listed in the bottom right hand corner of the thread page.

I'm a software guy and consulting person.

The TL is my daily driver, and I freakin' love this car. For the $, it's the best you can buy IMO.

I still think it's in poor taste to talk about your income in public.

Money management is a whole 'nother discussion however, and that is appropriate, although somewhat OT from this thread.

Scott in Houston: Your original post wasn't that bad, but thanks for reposting, and I deleted the old post.

We don't mind a little commentary as long as the main part of the post is on topic, but this is a long thread and numerous posts that have nothing to do with the subject make it harder to read and enjoy.

Project Manager (PMP) working for Ross Perot (Jr.& Sr.) in Plano Texas.

I sold my 96 Impala SS and put it all down on the TL, financed the rest. I've also had to finance an '04 Honda Pilot at the same time when the wife totaled the Chrysler Town & Country (not part of the plan). I work hard to balance my financials and keep the family floating. Wife works parttime so not a major source of income.

Gave up the muscle car and racing for more of the looks, reliability, and driver experience (all the tech toys inside the car) with the TL. Was looking at the 04 GTO and the TL.

Cars

27, been in the navy for 7 years....now making around 60k on shore duty (big difference from when at sea) Since joining the Navy i've had a saturn, cavalier, 5 honda accords!, a seabring (don't buy one...they suck!!), an 01 TL, currently have an 03 mdx and 05 tl.....My recommendation would be not to put down such a large down payment or do a conventional 5 year loan to drop the payment even more. I've had a lot of cars in the last 7 years, but i've also had two car payments the whole time.....luckely my wife also works (makes around 25k). I absolutely LOVE new cars though.

Sorry I strayed O/T. Whats the matter, did you have a bad day. I think CLOWNS is a lot harsh and don't consider myself to be one. This is a good thread and I did post to the point a few weeks ago. I didn't think we were that far off.

A Little Clarification

It appears my wording was not adequate in trying to convey the message I intended. The following part of my previous post was intended for the four people mentioned in the post whose posts were deleted, due to the content of their posts, and not the general membership and people who posted in this thread. I have read posts by two people who obviously thought I was talking to everyone, when I really wasn't.

I apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

I am going to reword the original post, and any quotes from it, to read as follows, which may prevent any future confusion, and also remove the names of the people whose posts were deleted, since they now know who they are and it is no longer necessary to list them.

To be fair, some were posts which told people to quit posting crap so the thread won't get closed, which was good, but some people didn't pay attention and just kept on posting. I may delete this listing of names later on after all the participants have had a chance to read this and know what happened to their posts.
