What would you do with $1,700??
Well heres the story..
My girlfriend drives a 2003 Ford Mustang (v6). Her car was parked outside in front of my home. My neighbor across the street some how backs up into my girlfriends car and left a tiny dent on the fender(driver side), my neighbor decides to take off so it was considered a hit and run. Like the idiot that he was, he didnt make sure to see if their were any witnesses or not BUT GUESS WHO THE WITNESSES were? His son was outside watering the lawn and my girlfriend was also outside. We called the cops and made a police report, we also had the son put in his words and he stated that he witnessed his father backing up into my girlfriends car. We then contacted the insurance company, a month later we got approval from the insurance company to waive the deductable which was like 600 bucks and to have us bring the car in for an estimate. We then took the car to a local shop that estimated about 1,700 for a freaking dent that i wouldnt even notice! We decided to have the insurance just cash us out, earlier today my girlfriend recieves the check and tells me that i can take the money and do whatever i want with it, so yay for me! But anyways, i am thinking about what to do with this money, should i invest it into my car? i dont have much bills and i really need some wheels and perhaps a drop along with the A-spec kit. Tell me what YOU would do with the extra cash, i really need some input

Its nice that you got $1700 but was it really necessary to call the cops on a dent that u said wasn't even noticeable. shouldn't u have waited for your neighbor to come back and talk to him before u called the cops UNLESS he is a total ASSHAT and then he deserved it but anyways i would never do that but then again all my neighbors are really close friends and they would come to me if they hit my car. I got rear ended yesterday after work. A friend of mine owns a bodyshop about 3 miles from where I got hit. I had the guy follow me to the shop to get an estimate. The damage was minimal, scuffed the A spec rear bumper. Damage estimated out to $566. The guy put it on his credit card. A new A spec bumper is $300ish paint matched. I'm going to get the new bumper, put it on and refund the remainder of the balance to the guy that hit me minus $50 for my labor. I think what goes around comes around. I would feel guilty keeping his money. He will still get back $200. I didn't even call the cops on the guy, didn't want to get them involved. Not saying what you did is wrong or right, but if you aren't even going to fix the car, you basically ripped of the insurance company and the guy that hit you. If he is indeed a major dick, then maybe he deserves it (what goes around comes around thing again). Just thought I would share my story, seems to fit here.

i understand what you are saying, the damage on the car is fixed already and i had a buddy of mine take care of it, and it came out to be about 300 bucks to get it fixed. i didnt cheat the insurance company believe me, stuff like this happens everyday.

dang! your girls a keeper! but i would get her something nice. if you think about it, she could have kept it all. then i guess you can do whatever with the rest. or maybe spend it on somethiing for the both of you.
getting paid for damage is not ripping anyone off. im about to get paid 1k for about 400-800 damage and i dunno if im gonna repair it. if i am it maybe be only 500, so i keep the rest. no way im gonna give that money back to the insurance company. if it was another driver then yea i would feel bad.

too many hobbies...
DAMN dude! You have the coolest girlfriend EVER! My wife is super-cool, but I don't think she would give me the money if her car got hit. That's just awesome. Good job on getting her the Coach purse - she deserves it.
About keeping the money...
I say keep it. If that dooshbag is willing to hit your car and walk without notifying you, F**k him and his insurance company. If he was nice enough to inform you, then he would deserve you being conscientious.
blueracer17, you did the right thing in your case and you seem like an honorable guy. And so does the guy that hit you if he was willing to charge the $500 to his card right then and there. But, I think this case is way different since the offender "tried" to get away with it.
Hope your girl enjoys her new purse and you enjoy your new suspension!

I'd take her out to a really nice dinner and make a financially responsible decision thereafter by putting it in a high yield savings account 5%+ or a CD yielding ~5%+ on a 6,7 month or 1 year term...
but def take her out to a nice dinner

this is what I don't like about insurance procedure. If you get an estimate from a shop which quoted you $1700 for a dent, obviously the bodyshop is trying to get as much as possible from the insurance company.
Also I don't understand why insurance don't send the money to the shop who quoted you to get the car fixed instead of just sending it to the owner to do whatever they want. I mean if the estimate is from the shop who quoted you, what don't they get that shop to REALLY fix it?
my point is if you're not even concern about fixing the car, why did you go through insurance? the son was there to witness the whole thing, you can easily ask them to pay for their mistake and take the money to do whatever you want with it instead.

Treasury bonds are investments. Mutual funds are investments. A house is an investment. If you want an investment, I would try something like that.
Pay off all of your bills, take your girl out to a night on the town, then bank the rest.

pretty much what he said is that an investment is something that you trust will increase in value. therefore, according to him, a car is not an investment.
Not even a 67 Corvette that increases in value every year? now that's an investment as long as you keep it nice and clean.

obviously you didnt read my posts. i got the car taken care of and that SOB did not even TRY to talk to us about the damages. the insurance company sent a check to the shop for the quoted amount because we were going to get it fixed but being a full time student and working full time i barely have any time on my hands to get this taken care of and same goes for my girlfriend.
if a car hits your car and takes off, who would you report to? obviously you're not a very understanding person because you dont know the situation.
1,700 is not that much and lets see where that money is going to...

they dont have any around my area so i had to order it, should be arriving in about a week.
the rest of the money will most likely go to some new wheels because the wheels on my car are hideous!
heres a glimpse

If you're gonna spend it on the TL anyways, lets see...what would I want to to get? I'd say go for a new set of wheels. Although, with winter approaching, that might not be the best payoff right now cuz I wouldn't throw my brand new rims on before winter.
If you like the a-spec kit, you can go for one of those...but I think you need to drop it also.

Just noticed how many older owners are saying to save up, experience goes a long way.. i've been down that road before to want many things but it feels much better to have some cash flow but if you really really want the wheels thats great too! I personally like the Seva rims and my iphone should be coming in tomorrow haha
