It's usually a sign of premature combustion. It's something you can actually hear. But usually when you can actually hear it internal damage can already have taken place.

Pinging is the sound of premature combustion causing the cylinder to rock back in forth against the sides of the block. It really sucks and if its happening it means you gotta get fuel with a higher octane level, or reduce the compression(guess which one is easier to do).
