What are the odds of a tranny fix - Out of warranty?

I have recently noticed a vibration (I think from the tranny) on light-throttle acceleration. It's at about 2000 RPM just before the tranny shifts to 4th (5AT BTW). It's pretty consistent and only at light throttle. I read through a lot of threads regarding similar vibration issues and it seams that the tranny may be the problem. My '04 has only 36000 miles on it.

I have never changed the tranny fluid so they may push that first, which seams reasonable. But if that doesn't solve it what are the odds that they will go ahead and fix it if is the tranny? My warranty ran out at the end of April this year. Is it worth pushing if they say no or are they very firm?

Wasn't there a bulletin a while back about extending the tranny coverage? Did it only apply to mileage or did it extend the time period as well? I can't find the notice that was sent out.

Anyone have any experience with this type of thing? Thanks for any input.

they told me the powertrain is until 70k miles then took it back, so i dont know, but i would try changing the tranny fluid first and go from there.

they might do it on good faith because of the millage on the car, take it in have them swap the fluid, if the problem persists mention it to them, if not ur ok, I will go out and say the problem will disappear with fluid drain

Is this right in the range of 45-50 MPH? That is where I get my vibration problem.

I have the same thing....mine started last year @ 45k. Dealer replaced the tranny fluid for free. That helped but the problem has come back...i plan on taking it back in within the month. This time they told me they are just replacing the tranny as this is somewhat common with 3rd gen's espically 04's. I have a 100k warranty on mine so i am not concerned, and i brought it in with 45k so its covered anyways. The tranny fluid is just a temp fix...it will not solve the problem. You will most likely need a new tranny as 3rd to 4th is slipping. I would have a good feeling that they might do it out of goodwill or at least pay 90% seeing that you have like no miles on the car.....best of luck...i would try your hardest to not pay for this....this is a known issue on the 3rd gens....

oh and the 45-55 mph virbration is a totally different issue. They issued a TSB for that where they install a dampener...which i've been told barely helps....again a very well know and documented issue on the 3rd gens....do a search for 5th gear drive line viration....you will see tons!

IDK but I think 6yr/70k thing didn't happen until 2006 model year. Anybody confirm?
OP, I would sure be trying to get goodwill for at least 90% due to transmissions history and low miles. Please let us know.

Its much more of an issue with 04-05's i have found...this could also be cuz the 06's don't have as many miles on them...from what i have heard, the type s has a tranny more like the RL to match the larger motor...i have heard those are fine....i have also heard of people with 04's that have 100k plus on them and not a single problem. I guess its just luck really...not nearly as bad of a problem as the 2nd gen....not even close....but still enough that my Acura dealer knew right away what i meant before even driving it and just said he'd order a new tranny right off the bat.

Sorry I didn't get back to update earlier. My 4-year old broke her arm the other day and had surgery. Far more important than any car issue.

But anyway, I took the car in the other day for the power steering recall. I spoke to them about the shudder and we decided to change the tranny fluid. While it was in they noticed the intake tube from the airbox was split half way around. They replaced that as well. The car now drives and shifts smoothly. I don't really know which solved the problem but it's much better. The intake tube has some vacuum lines and the MAP sensor connected to it so it's possible that caused (or contributed to) the problem.

MR1 ,

Thanks, she'll be fine. Kids bounce back fast.

I paid for the fluid change and intake repair because I'm out of warranty but all is well so far.

the intake tube would have made the prob you describe- the intake is a sealed system past the air filter, and has some major and minor vac lines going to it.
Any probs there make poor running in the strangest ways

At least it was simple, and it wont hurt the trans to replace 3 qts of fluid on it
