I always believed that the 04 TL had 270 HP, but many are arguing saying that the regulations on the HP rating was changed and it is actually 258.

Basically, 04-08 TL (base) has 258 HP.
Is this true?

Yes, it's true, 258 horses for the 2004 model year. SAE changed the measurement standards.

258 hp@ 6200 RPM/ 233 Lbft tourque @ 5000 rpm as per 2005 SAE revision. The horsepower for the 3.2 liter engine in the TL is the same from 04-08. This motor would be capable of more if Acura didn't set up the computer to pull timing from the motor after 6200 rpm. You can literally view this on a chassis dyno sheet. Also it would be much easier to upgrade these motors if Acura had produced them with Mass Air, as oppse to Speed Density. It's still a stout motor though.

The '04 was rated at 270 HP. The rating method was changed in '06, but that doesn't change what the '04 was rated at at the time it was manufactured. So if you were to buy a used '04 or if, like myself, you owned one, you could say your engine produced 270 HP and you would be correct.

It doesn't matter, really. What's important is how much power gets to the ground anyway.

old rating system 270bhp new rating system 258hp. actual engine output did not change, only the method used to rate it did. if you were to take a 06 TL and use the old rating system it would be 270hp as well....

Approximately 299 HP and 271 ft/lbs of torque. I figured these numbers in '06 because I was interested in perhaps getting one.
