I don't think Lexus is a Mercedes "wanna be." Just check out the comparisons where the LS almost always comes out on top when compared with the Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7-series, Jaguar XJ8, Audi A8L,...
I have to admit though, Acura did score right with the TL, ever since it came out in '99, as far as offering a great bang for the buck. In 2001, I bought myself a new TL. Great car for the price. Today I'm in a G35, which also is a great bang for the buck.

I know im saying this for like the 5th time, but sitting in an 04TL isnt as comfortable as an ES300 or GS300. Lexuses are great cars. You need to own one to appreciate it. We have 2 lexuses and an 04TL. The TL is faster, and has some more electronics, but thats pretty much it. The quality of the lexuses is higher than the Acura.

If you don't like my opinion that the IS looks like a Civic, thats fine but you do not need to call me a name if you felt insulted by it.
I have said it before, but you know way too much about Lexus'. You need to get a life, or a marketing job with Lexus.
With the internet, everyone has much of an opinion, so it's really stating facts and if you can sources to back them up that can really help a debate.

i second everyone's comments on Lexus quality--no one compares. my gf's rx330 is a great SUV and the interior is incredible, but I just don't get excited sitting in any lexus, especially not the GS...

Im not bashing the TL, i have an 04, and its got a great engine, but i have the Acura in the garage right now between 2 lexuses, so its pretty easy to compare them, and the lexuses are built with better materials and are more comfortable to ride in. You can tell the difference in quality by driving an Acura, and then Driving a Lexus. My parents like lexuses, i dont really like them, but if your talking about quality, and making the driver and passenger feel like they are in a true luxury car, lexus is for you. I really like the TL because its sportier than most lexuses, but to me, "Sports Car" and "4 doors" doesnt get along, unless its an M5, or Audi RS6.

IMO, Lexus' quality edge over Acura is extremely marginal @ best. The only Lexus I'd take over an Acura is the LS430 over the RL. But the new RL, is shaping up to change that.

I just wish Toyota/Lexus would QUIT with the copy-cat game. the LS is a Merc, and the new LS is a Merc-RL.
The first GS was nice on the eyes, the second GS was a Merc E-Class, hands down. Have you seen the new GS ?? it's a Friggin 04TL in the front.
The first SC was awesome, the current one, I've made better puddles of vomit.
The Camry/ES is just the fugliest thing to hit the road, it looks like when thieves put the stockings on their face and pull it way back slanting their eyes half way across their head.
The IS I'll have to admit it descent looking, tho I can't STAND altezza lights so I have to dock it for that. I don't like the new MDX tails for the same reason.
When Toyota can make a name for some styling of their own, I'll look.

Since the 1980s, Toyota's been out to prove that they can build the highest quality automobiles in the world, irrespective of anything else. And they are @ the pinnacle of automotive quality!! At what cost though? They havent had an enthusiast inspiring car since the MKIV.
I dont mean to turn this into a Honda vs Toyota thread but, IMO Toyota/Lexus has to revamp their lineup all around. (I guess Scion and the new GS is a start.) Outside of the current RL, the Honda/Acura lineup is SOLID!!!!

I haven't seen the new GS in person, but from photos I'm rather disappointed. The exterior AND interior design do nothing for me, and the engine output of both the V8 and the V6 lags its rivals in the mid-size, peformance segment. I'm sure it'll have top notch materials though; Lexus interior materials just cannot be beat IMO (w/ the exception of the IS300).
I much prefer the look of the Fuga, but I'll reserve judgment until production versions of both cars come out.

I dong like teh new GS, but have you seen the GX suv?? that thing looks pretty ugly to me, but ive seen about 20 of them already. Here in the Dallas Area acura's dont get as much respect as Lexus, Mercedes, BMW. There are also many, many Porsches around here. In the summertime there is a Porsche at every other stoplight. Why would u spend 50k for a 225HP boxster?... "value" is not the only thing that appeals to buyers...

I think Lexus get lots of sales due to their high quality (which is a good thing!) and name recognition, not their overall designs.
5 seconds after I saw the inside of the 04TL, I was sold. (Tried hard not to let the salesman know it, though!)
Also, let's see ...
TL HP = 270 .............. GS 300 HP = 220
TL TQ = 238 .............. GS 300 TQ = 220
TL WT = 3582 lbs ...... GS 300 WT = 3649 lbs
Are these two cars really in the same performance class? I don't think so.

Interior design is one thing (very subjective), interior quality in terms of materials and fit and finish (a little less subjective) is another.
I have yet to find another brand that comes to Lexus levels in the latter category.
The one place where Toyota/Lexus trails is in engine power. Their engines are quiet and very refined, but always seem to come up a little short compared to the competition in the power department. To this Lexus aficionados say, "Who needs all that power anyway?"
