What happens if you put too much oil in your engine?
I changed my oil yesterday and had a brain fart. I think our cars take 4.5 quarts (I usually check the dipstick as I pour it in), but for some reason I put like 5.1 quarts in yesterday. I thought our cars took 5.5 for some reason, it may have been me confusing numbers with my wife's BMW.
Anyways, what happens if you put too much oil in? If you put an extra half a quart?
Thanks!

I did that before, but I've put a little more.. You are fine.
.5 of a quart won't do anything... You are good.
I did 1.5 quarts more by accident, so I let some out.

^ 4.5 is oem spec... so drain and put back 4.5... sure you are ok with 5... but unless your car is a lease... I wouldn't risk it... so drain and refill

too much pressure against cylinder wall causing excessive heat & wear.. don't do it. Remember that engine oil is not suppost to compress.. so either it's going to give or your engine.. trust me.. it'll be your engine. It's better off to have less oil than more.

there is only one problem with putting in too much oil and that has to do with the crank
if the oil level is too high, the crank will whip it up into a foam and that is bad...............

at that point it will froth & sludge and push up which could lead to seizure.. I've read this happening in only few thousand miles.. but less than 1 qt won't do that.. just an example of what could happen.

5 quarts will not damage the engine... especially if you've placed a new filter..unless you've prefilled it.

You get 10 points.
Our engines have windage trays so overfilling some is not much of an issue. But too much will do what you have said here and that is a bad thing.
