What Do Your Do When Someone Gives You a Door Ding...
#41
im ashamed to admit this but i did this when i was a teenager. went to a baseball game in cleveland, parked in a compact spot in the parking garage (driving a meticulous 90 CRX Si that i just had repainted), came back out after the game and there was a full size van (one of the ones thats like a mini RV, people travel in) in the spot next to me. i couldnt get in my driver sside door so i had to get in the passenger door.
after i backed the car out of its spot i got out and drop kicked the side of the door in. felt good.
looking back, it was a D move because i didnt even have a ding.

You get over it after the first ding. It could've been an accident; no need to be a dick about it.
I parked in the back of the lot at a local Home Depot once and came out to this:
[picture]
There were NO cars around other than these two. I was angry, but I didn't act on it...maybe next time I'll leave a note.

If i'm not mistaken, your parking isn't too good either.

^ This. Be glad it wasn't in the body of your car. You can probably replace your door handle for relatively cheap. I would pursue that route.
Door dings suck, but it's life I guess. I do everything in my power to avoid them. I'll walk a mile before I park in a tight spot, but sometime there's literally nothing you can do to avoid parking in spots, and when that one day comes you can be sure that's the day you'll get a ding. That's how my one ding happened to me. You just have to suck it up. Sorry to hear about your ding.
The responses like this kinda surprise me. I would never even key someone's car for a door ding, much less pull something like this. First of all, they actually hit your car with theirs- they didn't simply open up a door on you. So you probably have a stronger legal standing if you want to fight it. But chances are it was an accident and if you handle it like a man you can probably get it taken care of the right way. "Key'ing the shyt out of the fuking van" and popping tires is ridiculous, cowardly, and could actually get you thrown in jail. Just stupid.
This isn't directed specifically at tones, I'm just talking in general now. I understand being pissed about someone who is negligent and abusive to your property... believe me I feel the exact same way, but in my mind you're worse than the offender when you willingly and purposefully cause damage to their property. At least what they did was most likely an accident. By keying the person's car and bailing what are you proving? Absolutely nothing. The odds of them even knowing what the hell happened are practically non-existent. They'll just think they're the victim of some asshat committing vandalism... which is basically the truth. If you actually want to do something about it, wait on the person or get their information and pursue that route. At least that way they'll be aware of what they did wrong and it will hopefully prevent it from happening again to someone else. You trying to talk to the person, showing them what they did, and trying to reach a solution that way is way more productive and effective then keying their car and bailing. Seems like I'm alone in this perspective though.
Wow. Sorry for the rant. Cool story, me.
EDIT: I feel like I should specify that none of what I said applies in a situation where someone deliberately caused damage to your car... only in an accident. If something purposeful happens, I still think there are better ways to handle it, but I think retaliation would be a little more justified.
Flame suit on.

The fact that you told everyone on a public forum that you vandolized anothers car...well...thats beyond me haha.
But, they probably did deserve it. Just wouldnt have done it.

And what if that car happens to belong to a mafioso and next thing you know your gf's Murano now has human remains of a police officer and someone just so happens to call the police as your gf was getting into her car.

This happened to me a few times when I worked at Acura. Jealous coworkers I guess. I paid to get the first one fixed. Then the company put in security cameras. After that, whenever I spotted one, I went to my boss and reminded him that we had cameras and he agreed to have the service department pay to remove any more door dings the car got. It quit after the third one.

Comptechtl2367, do you perchance have a .PDF of that flyer that you could upload? I'd LOVE to print out a stack of those to carry around, especially when I'm driving either of our other two cars aside from the TL as both are two-door cars.

Dude, this van must've had at least 5 feet of space in front of him, that's what got me so pissed the most. I'm sure it wasn't no accident if you got 5 feet of space in front of you and leaving parked while pushing mine back .

@ knavinusa I am saying so many open spots and they park next to me when I am parked far away. People do that on purpose. I have see people leave carts near my car on purpose when I am parked far away...its terrible really.
#56
Even if there are other open spots I don't see a problem with people parking next to me, provided they don't damage my car or leave me hardly any room to get back in. Sometimes people just drive into the first open spot they see. But I do hate it when people just leave shopping carts at their parking spot and drive off. They have no consideration for others at all.

But that whole post wasn't directed solely at you. I just don't think reacting like that is the best route. But I hear ya, there are some stupid people out there and they piss me off too.

I believe you. And I'm sure it was ridiculous and you had a right to be pissed. But if it came down to it you'd be the one going to jail, not him.

A few years ago while parked at a local mall me & the GF came out to my accord only to see that an "A"hole driving an older car parked at such an angle they blocked my driver side door. I couldn't even open it & I noticed a huge dent, evidently the passenger tried to open & slammed their door into mine. My GF had to climb over the passenger seat, the console & back my car out.
I grabbed a flathead screwdriver from my trunk & started from the rear driver side, across both doors, over the hood & then down the passenger doors. ^&*%$ THEM!

Be the bigger man and either let it go or confront the person when they come back to their vehicle.

Wow that's like extreme
@Orange: I don't think waiting would be a good option unless you're willing to sleep in the car. Never know for how long they were planned to leave their car there.

Nope, no ding. I have a couple of other dings from unknown sources. I usually park far away, between two other family cars at home, or in a very safe spot at school...so whenever I see a new ding, it perplexes me.
#67
If I witness it happen (IE: In the vehicle) I'll openly return the favor...UNLESS, the person is part-human and immediately apologizes. Other than that, it's kind of difficult to pin point when or where you got the mystery-ding.
I think the close-park thing pisses me off more than if someone was to ding me. I park in fuckin left field so i don't have to be surrounded by douchebags. GFY parking lot nazis. /rant

depends on my mood. i either:
leave a lovely note, yell at them, push their mirrors out, or just get in and drive away
oh btw, i never park close. i am that guy that parks with no one around, or if i park close i only park in the first spot and get as close to the curb or line as possible just to give the idiot that parks next to me more room

First in response to this:
Not true. Ever since senior year of high school (through college as well), any car I have regularly driven in, I have been able to drive past a spot, blindfold myself/close my eyes, and back in perfectly centered, without crossing any lines. Age or education has nothing to do with anything. It's really all about KNOWING THE SPACE OF YOUR CAR. Don't buy something you can't know inside and out.
Secondly, if the possibility is available, you could decide to spend more time wherever you are, and park your car within an inch of their driver's side door. That way, whether they are alone or not, you know that they will not be able to get in without crawling across the center console from the passenger's side. At which point, you can smile and hope that they are ridiculously fat. That's what I do when I need to park beside someone who is over their line (taking pics of their license plate, of course).
Lastly, yes dings upset me, and sometimes I wonder if it is up to us to bring justice to the world (aka take matters into your own hands, bro!).

Second - I'm not sure why you would do what you suggested when you could just approach them about the door ding. Your suggestion will probably just piss them off to where you either earn yourself another door ding or it makes them unreasonable and they wouldn't do anything about the first one.
Third - I still don't understand this whole "revenge for my doording" thing. No one seems to realize that when you get revenge on someone who damaged your property because they were negligent, don't care, and are stupid, you become someone who damages someone's property because their cowardly, don't care, and are stupid. It just doesn't makes sense to me.

yeah i did that once....thought, oh i'll park heavy to my driver side line next to the 350Z that parked heavy to their driverside, leaving plenty of room to my passenger side...last time i did that, the moron who parked next to me, hit my car as it was parked, pulling in and then left as soon as he figured out what he had done before i got back to my car. jackass, left a softball size dent and scraped the qtr panel near the rear passenger door. didn't even leave a note. grrrrr!!!

the 350Z was parked in the end space, i parked next to the Z. figuring oh i should be okay. shit was i wrong. first and last time i ever do that. now i park way the hell out in the middle of nowhere to stay away from the lazy asses that park up front. now i'm super paranoid about where i park and who i leave the car with (for service) and add in that i've become really anal about my car.

First - Buddy, it was just a generalized statement. I'm sure the guy didn't mean that EVERY college that EVER existed automatically sucked at parking. Of course there are going to be college students that can park a car. And of course you are the master of parking. But in general, college students do suck at parking. It really comes down to they just don't care. Just like 99% of drivers.
I'm still a college student and I'll be the first to admit that the vast majority of campus drivers blow. Maybe it's our immaturity, maybe it's lack of experience. Who knows. But the truth is a lot of us are either dipshits trying to show off to our friends or negligent drivers distracted by our iphones. I'm looking at you sorority girls :shakehead.
As for campus parking: Tight spots + lots of cars + loads of bikes = door ding nightmare.

part of it is inexperience. most college kids have only been driving at most...what...5 years? if that. and unfortunately today's young 'ens (not that i'm that far displaced) are too busy trying to multi task and do six things at the same time they are driving. this just adds to the complete lack of courtesy and awareness for others not only in the car but in general. technology has been a blessing and a curse. add that into trying to drive with the rest of peeps out there...nothing worse than distracted driving (sorry pet peeve). its bad enough grown adults who have experience haven't learned to drive/park responsibly.

As far as the last couple of posts go regarding college students, I think a lot of high school and college students simply don't care and view it as being your problem if you don't like the way they parked.

My thoughts are it takes a lot to make a door ding. It's not someone letting the door open too far accidentally, it's someone flinging it open, not caring about hitting the other car or it's intentional. I had it happen to my car badly one time, multiple deep scratches and a couple dings all of which perfectly matched the car next to me. I punched it so hard it looked like it had been in a bad wreck with another car.

I partially agree and I have no problem confronting the person. However, I know myself and I know the potential of it getting physical depending on the other guy's attitude. I've had a guy choked out across his hood when he rear ended me and then came at me with an attitude. I'm too old to get in trouble anymore. Plus, sometimes you could be waiting for hours for the person to finish shopping. Letting them know you don't appreciate the door ding or scratch they gave you might make them think the next time they park.
