What do you think of this deal?

I'm looking at a vehicle at a dealership in Las Vegas and was hoping to get some opinions on the pricing of it.

Vehicle Information:
Color: Black
Year: 2008
Make: Acura
Model: TL Type-S
Mileage: 28,301
Asking Price: $31,987 (it is certified)
Link:
http://lasvegasacura.com/Preowned-In...38A020731.aspx

So, I emailed the dealership and said I thought their price was a little bit high and asked what the best price they can give me is. They gave me the usual dealership bullshit about how the vehicle is priced fairly for the condition of it and that, if I made an offer that is close, they would consider it.

Based on my research, I have come up with the following (based on zip code 89117, which is where the vehicle is located):
Edmunds: $29,165
Kelley Blue Book: $31,295
NADA: $28,875 (but I think this isn't for a certified vehicle, I couldn't find information on a certified vehicle on the site -- I think it adds about $1,500 to the price, though, doesn't it?)

What do you guys think? I was thinking of offering them $29k, but I don't want to go too low. I'm buying out of state, so maybe I'm just not familiar with the pricing in the area.... seems like the three major pricing sites wouldn't lie, though. Also, any suggestions on how much you should haggle on a used vehicle? I've read a bunch of posts, but didn't really find an answer to that question.

Thanks so much. You guys are awesome!

The problem is when buying a car like this from out of state that the dealer realizes that you really want the car if you are willing to come several hours out of your way to get it. Therefore I do not see them giving you much of a discount...I bought my car 3 hours away, and even though I left without the car the first visit I only got $200 off. Good luck!

Just bought my 08 TL-S almost two months ago. Even though the mileage is pretty good for an 08, that's too much. Supposedly getting a car to be a CPO costs 1,500-2,800. Keep looking. They are few around with decent mileage and in great condition but you will find one eventually.
I was able to come down 2,500 from the asking price but it was painful. But once you add tax, title, blah, blah, blah, it will come close to asking price OTD so keep that in mind.

certified means somebody singed a paper to certified the car. nothing else. delerships will not spend tons af money in a car that they can sell at the price they ask, cuz ppl just dont know what they are buying or in most cases even know what to look for.

certified=washed and cleaned, in and out, engine bay. They will not change anything they dont have to under law or anything u will noticed. Tires and brakes will be change only if under 3 maybe 4, maybe a new air filter if its not too dirty, they wont even change the A/C filter in most cases.
so... certified=BS

I wish I could find one for anything close to that....

I've seen that one. If it wasn't so far way, I might even buy it. I want to be able to drive it home on my weekend from wherever I buy it from, though, so it's just a tad too far east. And really, I'd prefer somewhere that I can drive to and drive home from on my weekend -- I'd just rent a car for a day, drop it off in the destination city, and drive the new car home. Unfortunately, hasn't worked out for me just yet! Might be worth the price of the flight and the day of vacation, though -- 5k miles is freaking fantastic.

I was able to come down 2,500 from the asking price but it was painful. But once you add tax, title, blah, blah, blah, it will come close to asking price OTD so keep that in mind.
Yeah, that's how I look at it -- if I could get out the door for $2.5k less than the asking price, I'd be happy as shit. I think car price + TTL = original asking price is a fantastic deal. So far, I haven't even managed to get a dealership to come down, so I'm brushing up on my haggling skills.

There's one here locally with 33k miles, but it has taupe interior. Not sure if that's a sacrifice I want to make - worried I'd wish the entire time I have the car that I had the black and silver.

Thanks for everyone's help - I really appreciate it. Just emailed Power Acura at South Bay about one that they have listed, so we'll see. Kind of worried about the reviews I've read about the dealership, but most of them are service oriented, so maybe it wouldn't be too bad, since I wouldn't be servicing it there.

I wouldn't quite say they sign a paper and that's it, let's not forget that the warranty is also extended to 12/12 over factory and 7/100 on the powertrain. Given these facts, check what a generic extended warranty might cost and you'll see that most CPO cars are well priced. You'll always have the highs and lows no matter where you look, so one must just be a careful buyer.

The first one doesn't have the right interior color. Believe me, I wish it did. There's another one locally that has the light interior that I'm considering, but I think I'd really wish I'd waited for the dark down the road.... ugh.

As for the other link, thanks for your suggestion. I never thought to check Craiglist - I was probably turned off by all the murders and/or rapes that you hear about in the news. :P Fortunately, though, I added several to my list of interests and will be following up with them. Thanks again!

There was one 2008 i believe around 26k-27k miles CPO and they were asking i believe $27k. its at motor cars acura in cleveland ohio. and i understand its far away from UTAH but that is def high.

if you need their website its www.motorcarsacura.com

That price is a joke. Just for reference, I paid $33k for mine, NEW. So nearly $32k for a 2 year old car with almost 30k miles on it, yeah I don't think so.

I'd say no more than 26-28k OTD - 26k being a great deal. 2011 models are just out and that makes the 08's 3yrs old. Also, you could always make up some story about going out to Vegas for a party or wedding so the dealership doesn't think you're desperate. Many people go there on weekends anyways so not much deception needed there.

I'd have a hard time justifying a trip like this because I've seen many TL-S's at local dealerships and can honestly say I was disappointed in the condition of those cars 80% of the time. Pictures just don't cut it on a large purchase like this.

I totally agree with you, I would never agree to purchasing the vehicle without seeing it in person. Unfortunately, I have been looking for about 15 months and have not seen one single 2008 TL Type-S with the two tone interior in Salt Lake City or the surrounding areas that wasn't in terrible condition for the price, so now I'm either going to have to a) settle for the tan interior, which I think I would later regret, b) buy one with high miles (I would like one with 25-30k miles) that will most likely still have the tan interior, c) purchase out of state, or d) purchase something else entirely. Hell, I'd even pay a high price to get one in good condition, but they don't just exist here. It seems like the people who take care of the interior don't take care of the exterior, and vice versa.

Just going to keep being patient and hope it pays off, I guess. Thanks for your input, I really appreciate it. :o)

No problem bud. I agree on the interior. By looking at so many pics, I began to dislike the two tone interior and was set on the tan. When looking at it in person, the two tone was awesome and nothing like the pictures portrayed.

Goodluck in your search.

Getting the car "Certified Pre Owned" does a lot more than most people realize.

Tires must have certain tread depth, if not they're replaced.

Brakes must have 50% or more or they're replaced.

alignment must be in line, or it's corrected.

Battery must pass test or it's replaced

Bumper to Bumper warranty is extended to 6 years or 62k miles

Powertrain is extended to 7 years 100k miles

etc. etc. etc.

I just bought a WDP 07' TL-S with 30k miles on saturday.

I made a list of things I wanted corrected under the "bumper to bumper warranty while I was inspecting the car and was on a test drive, after the test drive I asked them to put the car on a lift so I could inspect it.

I bought the car for 23.250 and was out the door for 25k. this week they are doing the following:

Replacing the headlights with brand new ones due to condensation inside.
Replacing exhaust gasket due to it being cracked and letting exhaust escape
realigning the car because it drifts to the left
getting me new floor mats because the current ones aren't in the greatest shape.
realigning the passenger door which doesn't meet the locking mechanism correctly
ordering me a 2nd key because the car only came with 1.
correcting a rattling issue with the driver side door during road bumps.

All these things I noticed on the test drive and I got the manager of the dealership to sign my bill of sale saying all those items would be addressed.

There is a DEFINITE benefit to buying from an Acura dealer.

Wow, I've never heard of this happening to anyone before. Is this normal? The only thing I saw worthwhile on your CPO list was the extended warranty and maybe the tires (definitely not if they replace them with factory Michelins). JMO.

Where are you from? The more I look, the more I find that the TL Type-S seems to be like 5k cheaper on the east coast. Freakin' annoying.

Certified usually means that the dealership has put the car through an inspection process to make it like new again... that is why they offer extended powertrain warranties on most of them. I was a service/sales representative at a Toyota dealership and we usually spent somewhere around $1,500 on a certification on a car to inspect it and get it up to par.

I checked Blackbook for the Utah/Nevada area. Black book is what dealers use to price trade in's and this will give you an idea of what they paid for it. Keep in mind that dealerships have to make a profit but towards the end of the month they will "cut prices" to get numbers. So I came up with somewhere around $24,585, that's around what the dealer paid to get it. Adding the cost of certifying it would make it somewhere around $26,000 to $26,500. Now that this is a luxury vehicle dealers do jack up the price... (believe me, I always made a bundle off certified lexus models) so their pricing sounds about right. But now you now about what they have in it so...

Knowing they have to make money on any car deal, maybe come in around $2,000 to $2,500 above that. I would say less but they know you want the car as mentioned above. I think $28,500 OTD would be a reasonable offer and maybe $27,750 if at the end of the month and they are willing to bite. Good luck!!!

Thanks so much for the info, big_mac65! :o)

Can anyone confirm if there were 3 year leases for the 2008s? When I Google it, I can find people talking about it, but nothing official. If so, maybe there will be a nice supply coming into my area shortly... One can hope!
