What brand oil filter are you using?

Is OEM Acura oil filter made differently than a generic type? OEM filters are 6.50 apiece on ebay and you can probably get a generic at Walmart for 3.50.

There are a lot of studies and info on oil filters but the bottom line is to never "Fram" your TL. I use the Honda filter for an S2000 because I know from my research that it is very well made. Many others like the Mobil 1; Bosch and Purolator are good. Just don't trust your car's engine to a cheap Fram filter.

Those that are saying FRAM and others are bad for our cars, can you support your claim by providing facts other than "I read about it somewhere", or "..someone has told me so"?

If you do a Google search, you'll find many articles/comparisons and all the ones I've seen have stated that FRAM filters are low quality.

If I can find the articles I've read, I'll post the link.

they arent really that bad... a tech once told me at acura it just doesnt have the correct pressure it needs....like the stock one has....so to use another is ok but dont expect diff results...i guess it makes sense...even though its not the 100% correct pressure. he also said its ok if u must because theres not much deviation in size and pressure and materials so it really wont have adverse effects on any components of the engine.

yes its honda's filter in japan....i tried it once never felt anything different so i didnt bother....they say its got better filtration fibers and makes the oil last longer....how true that is....I dont know....if u ask me...oil is oil...it breaks down at the same rate all the time....some just have better wear protection added to them.

Amsoil not only is the best oil, they also make the best filters. Why would you use anything else??

Bosch 3312. $6.49 at Autozone. Half the price of K&N and Mobil1. Since ExxonMobil made $45 Billion last year alone while we paid $4+/gal for gas, I don't think they need my money for ANY of their products,

Fram filters make use of plastic bypasses and cardboard end caps. For the '04 TL, Mobil showed two filters: the M1-104 and the M1-110. The 104 is of a little larger girth.

Bosch made a 13.31% net profit last year. Exxon made 9.5%.

Honeywell made 7.7% net profit last year. Perhaps you should buy Fram since they make the least amount of money.

Call me cheap but I've always used the Walmart Supertech 7317 without any problems. I can get it for $2.50 or less and I love the fact that it also fits my 06 Vulcan 1600 Classic. Now if it will only work on my wifes new Odyssey I won't ever have to look up a filter number again!

What ever you do DO NOT use FRAM oil filters.
In my autos class last year we opened up a FRAM oil filter and inside at the ends of the filter is cardboard.
And we all know cardboard can corrode, and you dont want bits of cardboard all in your oil.

OEM honda or Amsoil for me. ever since i got my car its been oem filters and fluids. But ihave just made the switch to amsoil and amsoil filter, most of the so called "synthetic" filters out there are still using a paper media. the amsoil filter is made with synthetic fibers.paper/cellulose will break down faster than the synthetic fiber.a main reason why the amsoil filter can last a full year before it needs replacement. but i highly doubt anyone on here would leave it on that long.

But all the OEM filters are made by honeywell, parent company of FRAM. common sense makes me think that there is a possiblilty that the OEM filters are being pounded out at the same factories. The S2000 filter is still made in japan if i remeber correctly. if i'm wrong plz correct me.

Amsoil, Wix, Mobil 1, K/N are nice filters and the only ones I use on my cars. FRAM is bad. They might be a parent company of something but if you think cardboard is a good filtering element go ahead and buy it. I want a filter that filters not one that breaks apart and doesnt filter. Bobistheoilguy.com will give you more than enough information on oil filters and so on. Supertech from Wal Mart is also similar to Mobil 1 Filters from what I have read.

I didnt tell people to buy fram filters,i was trying to tell people OEM filter might also be made by fram.and if you havent noticed, most filters out there are made with PAPER!!!.I used to work at a honda dealer and one of the techs there cut open 3 filters one time. A fram, oem honda, and a K&N.And guess what. all 3 of them had paper filters in them.If you get a chance, you should cut one open and take a look to compare.

great thread

i used the K&N... pricey little f*ker though... like $13~ or so... i may try the mobil 1 M-104 or M110..

i will NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER use Fram filters.. i used one on my 2002 Explorer Sport, and the thing leaked like the titanic.... it was literally, a manufacturer defect... and something as simple to make, but IMPORTANT part of my car, i felt that the quality control at fram just doesnt compare to companies like Mobil, K&N or others of the such..

fram BLOWS

regular gas BLOWS

america's choice cereal BLOWS....

my

certain things, you can compromise quality for costs... i will never cheap out on oil, food, or tires

Not ALL of the OE filters are Fram/Honeywell. As you noted, the S2000 is the exception. It is now made by Filtech in the US, but uses the original Toyo Roki design. It fits the TL fine but has slightly more volume than the original 15400-PLM-A01.

Also, the original TL filter was made by Filtech (part number is 15400-PLM-A01). If you can find one (not the ebay replacement version) it is a MUCH better build quality than the Fram/Honeywell replacment 15400-PLM-A02.

Search. There is a thread where the S2000 (Toyo Roki and Filtech) and the PLM-A01 and PLM A02 are cut open and compared.

Shrug as an Amsoil dealer I still just use OEM filters. If it's good enough for Honda / Acura it's good enough for me. I don't track this car or consistently bang it off the rev limiter like my old STi though... if I did I would consider a better filter. I do use Amsoil 5w30 though, just ordered a new batch today
