What is this?

What is this? I pulled my plastic cover off the bottom of the transmission area and this thing is mounted there. It looks like a block with rubber attached to it. What is it for? Was something mounted there at some point?

Transmission mount? Kind of hard to tell with that picture.

It looks like Number 2. At the bottom right side of the pic. Maybe a mount for rear motor mount dampener.

Number 2 doesn't look like it. Mine has two bolts going upward mounting the thing. And no other thing mounted to it. Just a rubber thing doing nothing.

This is what i found on mine. The rubber block looking thing is actually a metal block . but yeah its weird how its just floating their. maybe something to do with impact , if the car bottoms out on a bump or something. I'm still trying to find a parts diagram. you got me wondering what it is also.

I'm about 99% sure i found it Here.. Its number 37 and 38 is the bolt you see on the bottom. It says its a sub frame damper. Here is a link to the site i found it at.

Ok thanks guys. What a weird thing that doesn't seem that it could do much. I hear a clunk on the driver side wheel/transmission area when I let off my gas pedal and am searching for it. I replaced all the bushings in the lower control arms and replaced the axles as well. Still getting the clunk. The guy before me has replaced all motor mounts with innovative mounts and replaced the lower tranny mount. The top one looks torn and shot but I wouldn't think that would make a clunk.

I would replace it and see if the clunk is there. Wouldn't hurt to get a good one in there.

That sub frame damper is there to minimize highway speed vibrations, it won't make a difference regarding the clunk sound.

There are lots of weight blocks on various parts of the car. It is all about managing the harmonics of various parts for sound/harmonic management/dampening. Read up on the TL-Diet thread if you want to find more of those blocks on various parts of the car.
