Weird Encounter

I'm at a red light next to a car and I speed off at green to make the next one but hit yellow. The car is back to being next to me and once the light turns green it burns rubber and gets in front of me. I realize it's a Cadillac and upon closer look, it's a CTS-V.

Weird thing is, it's taking the same back roads that I take home so it seems like I'm following it. The weirder part is, after it burns rubber and gets in front, it starts driving like a grandma, even on the shortcut/backroads. At least fly down those roads if you're gonna cut me off... What gives?

P.S. I just washed/waxed/tire-shined my car and it looks cleeeeaaaannnn... I should take some pics.

In LA, this is a daily occurrence. Don't pay attention to it. Just enjoy driving your TL at any speed.

I guess they thought you were showing off or something. Sounds like you got owned.

wtf.. lol.. wow what an inferiority complex.. the CTS-V thought you were racing it. You see what happened was he thought you were racing him and he had to show you up at the light, but then the douchebag said "oh shit, I burned up all my gas.. I better not go too fast or else I'll run out.."

Maybe he was trying to beat the GM bankruptcy and trying to get to his dealership before it got shut down, but then his car started showing its reliability and was dying before it got there.

Yes... I'm sure that was it...

You seem to be very misinformed lol The LS series V8's in GM's Corvettes and V series cars are actually very fuel efficient. I would regularly get 30mpg highway in my 03 LS6 powered Z06.
My C6 vette averages the exact same as my 07 TL Type S. go figure

And to Rocketsfan,
GM cars or no more or no less reliable than the Acura you drive. I have owned 5 GM vehicles so far all have been VERY reliable. My Accord I had needed a tranny replaced, my previous 07 TL had tranny issues, vibration issues, nav issues (I no longer own that 07 now I have a 07 Type S so far so good).

I wish people actually knew what they were talking about before they open their mouths :-)

Yes, because Honda reliability vs. GM's lack of reliability is a myth built up over the years that didn't exist. And Bob Lutz's comments on the CNBC documentary about GM where he admits they were content building inferior vehicles is also a myth.

Jeez.. you just had to unzip and piss on our parade.. thanks for taking it literally and taking offense. Yes the LS series of small block v8's are fuel efficient but I'm sure he was guzzling fuel going WOT and chirping his wheels at the stop light. Yes GM is a good company with good reliability. Now get out of here Party Pooper! Go back to your pool party.. lol.

btw.. I would LOVE to own the new CTS-V with the LSA engine.. .. I guarantee my fuel efficiency wont be 30mpg though.. lol..

Ditto... the CTS/CTS-V and the 2010 Buick Lacrosse are 2 GM vehicles I wouldn't mind owning (if they're reliable). Yeah, I know... they're not necessarily in the same league. lol.

Cadillac has been known to be dead last in reliability but since recently the reliability has jumped into acceptable standards. Before it would cost you an arm & a leg to get anything done and the MTBF was incredibly low among automobile standards. I have a transmission buddy and he said the time to R&R the northstar variant transmission is by far the longest among the competitors, something ridiculous like it cost more to R&R than the cost of a new one. I have friends who have worked for GM and buy nothing but GM vehicles and they don't see a great variance in reliability. The age of Mfg has matured for all of our benefits.. it's the business cost cutting / contracting that kills the product reliability..

MTBF = mean time between failure

for all you non-engineering folk

Don't get me wrong, the CTS-V is a sweet car but damn, if you have that much power, don't grandma it on the open road after trying to race someone. (and no, I wasn't racing them at all)

I have a theory.... The owner realized gee my car's got more power but damn that car behind me is sexy let me keep my eyes on my rearview mirror

Ps. A used acura tl-s (08).... Is the same price as a cts-v (out the lot)... As soon as you sign the paperwork... It drops in value tenfold

happens all the time to me on the highway. i will be traveling at a constant speed, some tard will pass me, get in front, and slow down. so i blow by him on the right, and he does it again... it's like they can't have anyone pass them but they don't want to maintain speed.

drove to FL last weekend, averaged 73 mph and 30mpg. spent a lot of time at 80-85mph, and plenty of 95mph+ sprints. thought that was pretty good gas mileage considering. pretty sure the CTS-V wouldn't be getting 30mpg at those speeds...

It's pretty easy to average 30mpg on the highway because if you think about it this way, Going 80mph, you are covering ground a lot faster so although you may be burning more fuel, you are still covering ground. 80 miles traveled in an hour and burning 2 gallons to do it would give you 40mpg.

MPG is not a measure of time...

You can be going 120mph while getting 10mpg...after 120 miles that's still 12 gallons used.

But if you're going 60mph and averaging 30mpg...after 120 miles that's 4 gallons used.

I hope what I said is relevant to what you meant.

yea...
What I sorta meant was that if you are going slowly (ie 5mph), it's gonna take you so much longer to cover the distance required for a good gas mileage (30mpg). And in that time frame (6hrs) you would likely be burning much more fuel than you would had you been going at a steady 80mph. It's like city vs. highway mileage.

What would be interesting to see is a graph of gas mileage vs average speed. I wonder what the most efficient average speed is. Maybe I can do a poll of everyone on their daily drive and graph it out.

there's a thread in the 3G garage about MPG at particular speeds with the TL.

the thing to consider is whether the percentage increase in gas consumed is greater or smaller than the percentage increase in speed. so if the increase in gas consumed from 50mph to 60mph (20% increase in speed) is less than 20%, then i will get better MPG at 60mph versus 50mph. if it is more, then i won't. so the point right before the percentage increase in gas consumed becomes greater than the percentage increase in speed is the most fuel-efficient speed.
