Week from hell. Car gets hit, TWICE!!!

Well I was enjoying the Eagles victory on Sunday when my friend, who just got married the day before slid on some ice backing out of his driveway and scraped both of my passenger doors. I was upset but decided that it was an accident and he made an appointment for me to get it fixed this Monday and agreed to pay for it. So I figured, hey, **** happens. So fast forward to yesterday. I was on the roof of a diner installing a new heating and a/c unit when I get a call from my mom. "Your car just got hit, its really really bad"
Apparently some douche hit a patch of ice on my street, hit my car, bashed the whole back end in, broke my axel, shattered my back window. Now I ask, how can you do all that damage in a 25 mph zone. He must have been flying. The best part is that he tried to leave. My mom ran outside. He was very startled and tried to explain that he wasnt trying to leave and how sorry he was. "Im having a really bad week" is what I was told he said...... Did his pos truck get hit twice this week? I dont think so. Sorry just had to vent. I havent seen the car yet. I will post pics later when I do.

Sorry about your car! If you can, I would get it fixed and trade her in. It will never be the same.

If you can, post some pics.... Sounds like your car maybe totaled. If not, DEMAND deminished value (check your state's laws). Usually insurance companies will total a car if it exceeds 70% of the value....hopefully, deminished value will push it over that mark. Here in Texas not only can you ask for DM but if the car is less than 1 year old, you can also get your TT&L back as well.

you would be surprised

they will be able to fix it... If you are in a lease, fix it and drive it...

my 01 was bumped 3 times and hit once on the side. yeah rots of ruck there..

Sure it was not worth as much in trade.. but it drove fine. The bumps (bumper covers) are nothing... hell it happens on maybe 1 in 20 cars that get transported..

What an insensitive remark!

How do you go out and clear the entire roadway of ice? How far up and down the street do you clear the ice?

You could have said if he hadn't parked where he got hit, he might not have gotten hit, which is as bad a statement as what you said.

At least if it is a lease, you do not have to worry about getting screwed on trying to trade in a damaged car. I guess you will lose any deposit though, I am not sure how leases work when it comes to accidents.

As long as it is fixed by a reputable body shop he won't have a problem. The deposit won't be affected unless he submits the car with excess wear and tear, which a fixed repair wouldn't apply to. The great thing about leases is that the lease company takes the hit on trade in value not the leasee.

I didn't know it was my responsibility to clear my street of ice. My walkways are clear, my driveway is clear. That is all I'm responsible for. As far as parking in the street its inevitable. We have a 2 car driveway and 4 cars so.........

Ill post pics momentarily

Boy, that's a real bummer. We feel for you, but a good body shop should make it come out right. I took the liberty of copying the pictures here so they are easier to see.

Wow, that is just pathetic. God damn the driver to hell who hit your car. Look at the bright side, that loser could have took off and left your car like that. At least its a lease - i leased my car as well and will get another TL in 3-4 yrs, or another car (if it is better than the TL).

Of course there is. My father takes 5 yr leases, but returns the cars after 3 yrs. He has done the same thing for me, and for my mother - he likes us to stay "updated." I know my father does it all the time, and when i went with him to the acura salesman, he told us that i can return my car before lease expires, any time i want.

-But the thing is (though im not certain) each time my father returned the car before the lease, he got another car from the same dealership. So i guess if you return the lease, the only way out would be to another car from them.

If i were you, i would rapir it, and keep it for 2-3 years. Drive it and abuse it, then return it.

None that I can think of... Oh, you can claim deminished value in Jersey..... For more details, do a Google on it. You can also ask your insurance company about this....

Don't forget to demand a rental vehicle of the same class as yours....

On the brightside you weren't in the car when it got hit. Probably not what you need to hear right now, but it could have been worse. Hang in there.

Deminished Value = Car's Value before the accident - Car's value after accident

Deminished value covers the loss the of value. This is where you have to do your homework. Don't just accept what the insurance company initially offers you (usually a low ball offer). Once your vehicle is repaired, shop it around at several (preferrably 3) dealers (Acura) and get estimates in writing as to what it is worth. Then check these numbers against what the insurance company will offer you. For more detailed info, go to www.deminishedvalue.com.

This accident wasn't your fault. You should not be made to pay for someone's bad driving. Make sure you get the money you deserve......... Geez, I sound like one of those cheezy lawer ad's......

No sheet! Give your mom a nice big hug and kiss for walking up on the low life as he attempted to leave the scene of a major accident. Were the police called? If so, shouldn't he have been ticketed for the accident AND for exceeding the posted speed limit (perhaps even reckless endangerment/driving)?

Regardless, be glad nobody was in the vehicle!!! Good luck with the insurance and lease!!

I'm guessing he was doing closer to 60. I've been rear-ended by an ancient camry doing 50, and it didn't cause that much damage.

Well, I just hooked my stereo up to see if it still works. It seems to work ok except 1. Theres i crease in the bottom of one of the subs where the amp was pushing it. Its not ripped all the way thru so the speaker seems to play ok. 2. The corner of the heatsink on the amp cracked off. Which again doesnt really affect its performance. Should I just say **** it, or should I go thru insurance and try to get my stuff replaced. The only problem is that the amp is a few months old. I just bought it on ebay so I dont have receipt for it. maybe i can contact the guy about it? Do you think insurance will cover the damaged equipment?

Any input is appreciated

Knowing a thing or two about forensics when it comes to automobile accidents, I can tell you that he was most definately NOT doing 25 to do that kind of damage (looks more like 40 to me).

Please tell me that you called the police... if not, then you are most likely screwed (esp. if he already tried to weasel his way out of it once).

Yes, your amp is probably covered... check out your user id section in MY EBAY and look at the pic... it'll have what you need (or e-mail the seller for a copy of the invoice).

Cool... did you contact the guy's insurance company yet? Make sure that you have a copy (or original) report from the cop in your hand when you do.

PS: if they start to get into the whole "conditions bad, not really our fault" please inform them that the rear crumple zone was totally compressed, which requires quite a bit more force than an pickup doing 25 into it...

Insurance agents usually don't survive long when you have math and physics on your side.

if he were driving a semi, it'd be a different animal.

Well 17 days after the fact, they just started working on my car. Damage was estimated at 11 grand and rising. They said it will probably go up a few more thousand once they tear into it.
