i have an 05 6MT tl and there a really annoying vibration in the steering wheel at different times. I've been trying to narrow it down.
it shakes when I really get on it getting on a highway, and between 70-80 mph. everywhere else is pretty smooth.
wheels are balanced, so I know it's not that.
Ive read it could be the motor mounts...
but its smooth when its idling, could it still be the motor mounts?
and lastly ive read it could be axles...
but the stuff ive read with axles is, FWD cars the axles wouldn't really make a bad vibration, its mostly RWD cars.
also theres no "clicking" when slowly turning sharp. BUT i can grab the actual axle shaft and feel a very tiny amount of play.

I've read that worn shocks could also cause this vibration.

 

There are only a few things that "should" be expected to cause speed sensitive vibrations.

1.) Tires
2.) Wheels
3.) Axles
4.) Bushings

If it is a steady vibration at a specific speed, it is probably one of the first three. If it is only upon acceleration or some other input, it is probably bushings or something else in the suspension.

Just because your tires are balanced does not mean they are not the culprit or maybe your rims are tweaked. Rotating the tire/wheels around the car can help isolate if the issue is the tire/wheel or something else.

 

I was experiencing a vibration in the steering and floor board of my car when accelerating 30-50 mph. It was slightly noticeable when slowly accelerating but when I floored it, it was much more obvious.

Changed my right cv axle myself and problem solved.

I had this exact same thing happen to me recently. I got new tires on the fronts and I always noticed a slight vibration at hwy speed 65-80mph since I bought the car (used). It eventually grew on me and I went in 3 months later to have the tires balanced. Turned out I had 3 bent rims. Last week I had the rims straightened out and refinished at AWRS wheel repair. I can't get the tires balanced for 3 weeks-Clear coat has to dry I guess. The wheels are balanced to when they were bent. I can definitely notice the vibration is softer post wheel repair so hopefully it's gone once tires are balanced as that's how it feels. I think the vibration of a bent wheel is more intense feeling (firm) than balancing issue? Could be wrong but that's how I felt. It maybe worth getting a second opinion on the balancing as I went to a different shop the second time.

 

Same thing happened to me as well. Took it in for a very minor vibration at a certain speed. Turned out it was a bent rim and a tire that was patched on the inside sidewall

 

I have 1 year old OEM Type S wheels and get vibration at 70+ too.
Getting new tires and Hunter road force balancing in October.
Hopefully, this fixes my issue...
I didn't have this when my tires were in good shape.

If not, I'll go from there. I rarely do 70+ anyways.

 

I guarantee you have a bad axles. I'm a mechanic and have dealt with many Hondas and fwd & rwd over my career. My Acura fam here in Dallas can back me up on my expertise. Here's how the scenario goes...


Shaking-
Highway/city speeds on/off gas(at all times)-tires out of round, bent wheels, tread separation etc. Basically if you have a vibrationn while driving its wheel/tire related(95% time)


Shaking while braking- warped rotors(front shake the wheel, rear shake the seat)


Bad axles- cause vibrations upon loading them up. This means mild to hard acceleration. Clicking on turning only indicates worn bearings in the axles. Ive already done mine on my 07 TL and 01 Accord I had, its extremely common. You can buy the inner joint as a kit from Honda/Acura and do it yourself. Remember, Acura axles are far superior to $60 reman from autozone. Expect to replace them once every 6 months if you go that route.

I have also had Cross balance issues that are super hard to diagnose until u know what cross balance is.

Is when u have both front or rear tires out of balance slightly. Then because the wheel spins at slightly different rates due to turning etc.. The wheels can actually counter balance each other so u will have a wheel shake for 2 mins then goes away for 5 then comes back.

So as one wheel is pulling the other wheel creates an opposite counter force which nullifies the wheel shaking temporarily until it goes back to the wobble.

I could not for the life of me figure this out until one day I just bit the bullit and got the tires rebalanced and voila. They were only off by a couple grams but I can feel any shake through the wheel cause I'm OCD lol



Cross balance... Most people don't have a clue about it and think its some whole other intimate problem with the car.

 

Ahhh you're right on the on the money man lol....My car started doing this like 3 months ago give and take and is pissing me off. I don't think is my axle but i may be due for a wheel alignment/ balancing. We in NY had a rough winter and never got my car checked for wheels damages. I fact found a bent rim before due to potholes and it was repaired by my Tire Shop. Also another cause may be bad engine mounts perhaps? I know one of my mounts is broken.

 

Acura tech here. Gonna have to agree with it most likely being bad axles. Be careful with aftermarket reman axles because sometimes they don't fix the issue. You can rebuild axles with just the outer joints and boots.
