Value without a working navi?

Hi all,

I recently had a big navi problem with my 05 TL so I brought it into the dealer. I was expecting about a couple grand if the whole thing needs to be replaced but wow…turned out that the navi unit alone will cost $5775. So it will cost more than 6k with taxes and labour. Unfortunately it’s just 7000km over warranty  and I found out that the basic warranty is extended to 4yr/80000km from 06 models haha…this sucks. I also called the Acura customer relations thingy b

So I’m most likely not going to get it replaced from the dealership but probably will go for a portable one instead (better choice, right?). But in this case…how much do you think it will affect the value of the car when I sell it later, without replacing the navi unit? (fyi, the navi doesn’t work at all. the display’s still working fine but it’s the navi unit) I doubt it will match the $6k though.

Thanks!

I take it that you are in CANADA by the use of km terms, however, $6k is waaayyyy too much for an OEM nav system from acura.....i thought it was a $2k option??.....thats ludacris man....sorry bout ur navi problem....if that be the case, might as well buy the componets off ebay and/or acuraoemparts.com! im sure it will STILL come out wayy cheaper than that. as far as the value, if its not working, i guess then u would have to consider it a NON-NAVI tl in terms of value. my $.02

Yeah- that seems way too much. Look for some used units.

It may need a new dvd drive unit in the trunk, my 01 had that quit about 4 years into its life- warranty covered it.
The dealer (service writer?) may have figured the cost of every nav part- the display screen- antenna-driver- when giving you a price- ---everyone is hurting these days---
Always speak with the SERVICE MANAGER for helpo- they talk to acura on your behalf.

A written letter to acura corp- stating the current KMs and how little out of warranty it is- the fact of the next model year gets better warranty- should all say there was an issue on the nav
A reasonable thing would be 100 percent coverage of the repair- which wont be anywhere near 6 grand-- I suggest you ask a few radio shops about it
The next reasonable thinkg would be you pay 10 percent- so it covers the labor
Beyond that- you tell everyone on acurazine and anyone you meet wanting to buy a TL of the same year- the nav may die and cost an unrealistic amount-
and yes it will reduce the value -now you have a giant screen that does nothing but the a/c control display (guessing same as gen2 screen)

Those nav units are extremely expensive. I don't think the number they are shooting you is a BS one. This is why I am a firm believer in extended warranties on these cars. There are soo many things that can go wrong and most of them are very expensive nowadays.

(Seems like there are some typos/errors on my first post for some reason...)

Thanks for all your inputs, and yea it was for the navi unit in the trunk alone that costs 6g from them...saying that it's the 'brain' part of the navi system.

Also, thanks for the website acuraoemparts.com; the navi unit seems to be so much cheaper there ($2.4k), are the parts there new?! is the website reliable also? I think I might get one from there instead of a portable one...

edit: oh and yes I'm in canada! I guess I have to consider the tax on top of the shipping cost too

dude i would just look for a new navi on ebay after talking to acura and stuff, they should take care of you. If your current dealer doesn't I would recommend driving a bit to another dealer or two and see what they do. You would be surprised how different dealers treat these problems but if all else fails ebay it. Ask for a break down of parts from the dealer that quoted you because it seems like all you need is the navi dvd decoder in the trunk which you could easily unplug and plug the new one in. They go for under a grand on fleabay, not cheap but well worth it in resale value.

Oh something else that works great for me, send your gf in and have her play dumb. The blonder the better....

Yes their parts are new but there service fuckin sucks. I highly recommend oemacuraparts.com (which is acura of peoria) because they are quick and friendly. Delray has some major issues from my two experiences ordering online from them

Have you tried contacting Tim @ hondacuraworld? He is a vendor on Acurazine.

What I would of done, it's scratch the whole going OEM, and just get myself Pioneer Avic-Z2...I had Z1 and I loved it...it was awesome on many levels.

You have your dvd, tv, back up camera, hard drive for ripping and storing cds, amazing audiophile options and a lot of neat stuff...the navi is excellent there as well.

There was recently a class action lawsuit to extend the factory warranty by 5 percent so you may fall under this extension. This change applies also to 2005s. I hope it applies in Canada as well. My factory warranty (I have the extended warranty as well) did expire at 50,000 miles but has been extended to 52,500 by Acura.

Well, to the original question though...
I think the value would tank significantly - even lower than a non-navi. Frankly, you may have a really tough time selling it unless the price is low enough for someone to consider it a steal. my hunch: value minus $5,000.

Yea maybe, I was somewhat thinking that too =/ and I don't think the 5% extension would apply to me, it's still 63k

I found an OEM navi unit from oemacuraparts.com...the place looks pretty reliable (since it's from an actual Acura dealership, right?). But why and how is it so much cheaper there? I mean like...it was about 25% lower than the MSRP there :S (and less than half the price here in canada!) not really suspecting or anythign but yea. I wonder if there's anyone here who have bought anything from the place before?

Anyways...at $3k, I do think it's worth it, considering that I have to sell it at some point.

Ah, what EXACTLY did you do to "fry" your unit? You can buy these on eBay for under $2K and some of them are even gaurenteed so if you are trying to determine value. Pick the private party figure and then reduce it by 2 grand.

Go to ebay and buy a new unit from there. There are a bunch of people that specialize in selling just OEM nav units for all makes and years for 1/5 retail cost. I have bought a from acuraoemparts.com several times and never had a problem with them. There stuff is all new. They are a Acura dealer. If you cant get Acura to pay for it go to ebay, contact the sellers and tell them you need just the brain portion, buy it and be done with it.

If you aren't in a huge hurry, just keep checking around.

I just completed the conversion to navi and I found a dealer who was dumping inventory they had from an unclaimed warranty. So I got the DVD unit, factory remanufactured basically still sealed for $85 + shipping.

There are many deals out there to be had. I found mine via google search and craigslist.

$85?? Wow what a deal o_O

Yea I'm not really in a hurry or anything but want to get done with it asap, cause I've been having this problem for a couple of months now and I'm getting sick of it

I wanna see if it's the problem of my disc, as a last try (since the dealer didn't have one for a 05 model).
If I load my disc into my computer and the disc is working fine, is it supposed display any contents or anything else in it if I double click on it? or would it not recognize it at all?
