Using tiptronic

This will no doubt be a noob question.

I've owned 3 TL's, and I haven't really indulged in using tiptronic for spirited driving.

My question is, when you are shifting, should u release your foot off the gas pedal until the gears have shifted, before accelerating again?

What is the proper way of using tiptronic is what I'm basically asking.

Thanks!

Nope i dont, and im still on my first tranny. lol but i dont use it much, it immediately shifts out of first to second (retarded) and from there you have all control. Not really that cool, you can just redline all the gears past second.

During city driving in tip tronic, i lay off the gas until it's in the next gear, but in spirited, i keep my foot on it.

But if it's the right and proper way is beyond my guess. I would also like to know.

Interesting, my 00' and 02' TL did that (auto shift from 1st to 2nd and vice versa) but my 08 doesnt. I have full authority over the gears.

What I've been doing is accelerating, releasing my foot off the accelerator, shifting up or down, then accelerating again. Got me wondering if I needed to release my foot off the gas pedal or not because it really creates a delay in accelerating through gears.

no you dont have full authority of the gears, as the computer wont let you downshift into a gear that will over rev the motor....

as for letting up on the gas, there is no need to do that, your not driving a manual, its still an automatic, with the exception of your telling it when to up and down shift....the computer is taking care of the rest, so your letting off the gas is probably doing more to confuse the computer than anything else....

Yea when i said full authority, I was referring to selecting 1st or 2nd.

As I said, in my prev gen. TL's, shifting to 2nd from 1st and vice versa was something that I could not do using the shifter. It was done by the computer. In my 08, I can hold it in 1st for as long as I need before I want to shift to 2nd, and vice versa without the computer having authority over it.

On 07-08 you can hold 1st gear, when you let go off the gas.. you get a bit more of a kick when shifting.. but seriously after 3rd gear is pointless

the 07-08 will auto shift from 2nd to 1st if you dont downshift to first....

its been my experience that the car does a better job at shifting then i do, but i do use the manual mode to hold a gear when going through a corner sometimes, that way the car doesnt upshift on me.....

I hate when it shifts into 4th in a turn.
When I'm in traffic, I leave it in 2nd to avoid shifting from 1st to 2nd.

I've never had a problem in a turn with the car upshifting, it downshifts (because ur supposed to break entering), then no throttle no break (correct technique)

I've gone into mean curves at 80, and braked, coming out of the curve in 2nd (in automode)

Well it depends on the speed in which you enter the curve, I brake entering the turn (if needed) then I accelerate in the curve.

yea, i dont need any advice on how to enter or exit a corner as i have spent alot of hours on the racetrack with motorcycles...and you dont always brake before the corner and then power out, sometimes you back door a corner, sometimes you trail brake....

anyway, the car will upshift on you if your in a corner and trying to hold a speed, and keep the revs up and power out, the last thing you want is for the car to upshift and upset the chasis while you are hitting the apex....

any of this make sense...
