unlocking car with cell phone
Don't know if this was covered but someone told me you car unlock your car through the cell phone. Basically if you lock your keys in the car and the second remote was at home, you call home, let the person put the remote up to the phone and you hold your cell phone 1 foot ( I put it on top of the windshield) and bam car is open. I tried it and it does work. It's almost like I want to breakdance now I know it can be done. Anyone ever try this?

Thats a sweet concept. Does this only work on 3g TLs or could it be done on the 2g TLs too? Also does it matter what type of cell phone you have and do you have to have internet on your phone for this to work?

keyfobs use RF, cellphones use RF to transmit digitized voice. The microphone only digitizes sound waves. not RF waves.

Your offer seems quite tempting and intriguing. Where may I inquire about further details?

But for real I don't have that much time to come on this site and lie. i did this about 10 blocks away. Someone mentioned it to me and I laughed.Last night I said hell let me try it and banm it worked. I also have an 06 evo but that did not work, so i don't know the principle behind it. Thought it was impossible

I tried this with my roomie today. I went to my car and called him to ask him to try it out. (Apartment is not within range of parking lot just fyi) I did NOT unlock, lock, or open the trunk. However, he DID scare the everlivin' outta me by hittin panic! It was kinda cool... I'll try it myself some other time to see if it works. Very cool

Wow..when I was standing about 20 ft from the car with my wife standing next to the car, when I called her on the cell and hit the unlock on the fob......amazingly, it unlocked the car....he he
I suppose next we can open garage doors with two cell phones and a garage door opener.
Now don't you wonder that if it truly worked, it would be in the owner's manual?
"Hi honey, I'm almost home but I forgot the garage door opener. At the count of 3, hit your garage door opener. I'll just keep driving into the garage door because I know it'll open."
I heard that if you have two cell phones and the key, by turning the key in an imaginary slot, you can start your car.
he he...all the above is me at the keyboard after too many beers on a Friday night....time to sleep it off.

Pimpin' Ain't Easy!
it works
yeah... i tried it... i live in waukesha - thats about 40 miles away from where i am now (work) - about 231 blocks west of lake michigan. I just called my dad (at home) and and had him use his cell (same as mine - cingular 8525).
it worked. I had him unlock my car, and hold down the unlock to make the windows roll down... i couldnt believe it!
NOW ALL YOU IDIOTS WHO BELIEVED ME IN THIS POST NEED TO GIVE ME YOUR KEYS BECAUSE THERE IS NO WAY YOU SHOULD BE DRIVING A TL!!

Well, was looking at some other threads about this, and people are trying to get the Mythbusters to try and find out the truth behind this one --- That Thread
I found these links that seem to say it doesn't work, but people insist that it does

This worked on my Legend. No bullshitting - had gf do it! First, I had her try to unlock and lock doors without cell phone to ensure I was out of range. Then I called her and had her do it, and the shit worked!!! However, I wasn't able to get it to work on my 03 TL-S. I know for a fact that the Legend was an aftermarket alarm. I am not sure if I did it factory or aftermarket with 03 TLS. Maybe that makes a difference? Anybody with factory did it and isn't lying?
I'm going to try it on my 3G when it's daylight! Hopefully NBP makes it work!

Even if it operated on the exact same frequency, this still shouldn't work... Here's why....
1.) Cell phones are optimized for voice traffic. So when the phone digitizes your voice, the compression/encryption schemes used have voice in mind, so it throws away part of the spectrum that it doesn't need, to minimize data it sends over the network. (Think MP3, but more tuned to voice). And heaven forbid your home phone uses VoIP or something and happens to negotiate a very lossy codec...
Anyways, whatever signals the phone sends/recieves, is through the microphone/earpiece. The speaker on the earpiece ain't gonna be broadcasting RF, and the microphone certainly wasn't designed to recieve RF. The networks certainly weren't designed for it either. That's why since the advent of GPRS/3G-IO/etc, you can't use your cell provider's voice network for your laptop to dial a dial-up network provider, UNLESS your cell provider has the equipment to handle that, because the regular packetizers on the network will certainly filter out the signals.
(I deal with these kinds of things at work)

it shouldn't matter where you hold your phone then...because the transmitter for the Key fob isn't in the door handle...it should be in the multiplex in teh fuse panel...
