Nope, he didn't get arrested or his car impounded. Just a ticket for no insurance and a court date. He might have gotten other tickets too but I don't know about that.

Here in NJ you would be amazed at how many drivers have no insurance but drive around with a valid insurance card. Here's their trick: They call up an insurance agent & arrange to get insurance coverage, they make one payment on the policy & receive a insurance card valid for 1 year and don't make another payment & their coverage gets cancelled, but it doesn't matter to them, they have the card & can drive a whole year & even if stopped by the police its okay because that card says they have valid insurance. A lot of them use a phony address for their driver license, vehicle registration & Insurance, so if they have an accident cannot be found. NJ Police do not have a database to check for valid insurance but NY does. My Son's Subaru got hit 3 years ago, the young driver presented a valid insurance card to the cop, I paid my $500 deductible & my insurance carrier went after the other driver only to find out his insurance had been terminated 6 months earlier. They sent him letters but he never responded & I never got my deductible back. I could have sued him in small claims court but I know he wouldn't even show up so I decided not to waste my time. But as least his credit is ruined.

when we moved from pa to nc we cancelled our car insurance in that state and bought it in NC. Less than 30 days later we received a letter from the commonwealth of pa stating we needed to send them prove of insurance or our registration would be suspended. We registered our vehicles in NC. I still amazed how many cars in any state are uninsured. How many driver's have revoked licenses and could careless.

Here in Houston, the cops have cameras on their cars actively looking for uninsured motorist.

That's tough man, two hits in 7-months of ownership. Wow. Hope it comes back better than ever.

Amen. I'd feel a lot safer everywhere if that was the case. If only, right.

First off,

I am glad you are OK and not seriously injured.

does your state allow for restitution? In MN for example, you can go after the driver for the remaining $500 via small claims court. Hard to collect even if you do win a judgment but it can be done...

I don't know if that's accurate. My previous car was totaled by a hit and run and I received nothing.

I think he means when you buy your insurance policy you can add something called uninsured motorist coverage. It's exactly for things like this. I know in some states you can drive legally without insurance (like in va, but I honestly don't understand why anyone would) as long as you pay the $500 fine.

I pay nearly $5,000 a year for insurance on my 2007 TLS, 2011 CRV, 2008 Mitsubishi Evolution & 1998 Accord. Of course my 21 year old son & 20 year old daughter are deemed high risks. It annoys me that I pay insurance & there are those out there who don't have it & keep driving giving two craps & screw the system constantly. That's primarily why I drive the Accord & the TLS stays home.

Sucks, sorry. Thank goodness for Uninsured motorist option and they stopped. Isn't required in CA, but always had it, and I have high coverage elsewhere, totally need it in CA. My friend's husband is LA County sheriff and he says you won't believe how many ppl are uninsured and even unlicensed and hitting cars/people and running.

Sorry to hear that. 4 years ago I was hit by a driver on the tollway in IL, she hit us and sent my Durango cartwheeling in the ditch at 70. She took off, it wasn't even the owner of the car driving. They ended up sending the driver to prison for 4 months since my daughters arm was broken in the crash. But I sued both the owner of the car and the driver in court. Won both cases, and I'll never see a penny. They both had phony addresses and job info. It certainly is a broken system.

Thanks everyone. My insurance company is working surprisingly quickly. I still haven't taken it to the body shop yet though. My girl is feeling better, no lingering pain, so that's great.
