Two Maximas and Me

I have a buddy who happens to have a 10' maxima and recently purchased an 07' maxima. I always race him with my G35 and absolutely annihilate the 10' from any gear; roll or dig. Its basically bloody murder every time. I find that the reason behind his loss is the crappy CVT transmission. He just cant launch that car well enough. Strangely enough, his "new" 07' is the faster car; even with the same CVT. Although I still rape him, it wasn't nearly as bad as the margin with the 10' was. I have pretty clear videos that ill put up soon. Has anyone else noticed this? Are the older ones that much faster stock for stock? This wasn't the only instance btw

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't CVTs have quite a bit more drivetrain loss than autos / MTs?

I've raced a couple 04-08 Maximas and they're quick, VQ motors really open up when you add breather mods to them (03SlowMaxima is a perfect example of this, 12s @ 108mph N/A .

^ I dont see why they would. Its basically one planetary gear. It says that it allows for the engine to continuously run at the RPM where peak power is achieved to maximize performance. Basically, you gun it and the tach will go to redline and stay there till you top out. Ive driven many; they don't feel particularly slow, just unconventional.

Strange that the 10 Max wouldn't be as quick as the 07, particularly as they're generally the same curb weight with the 10 having a 45hp/9 lb-ft advantage. Then again, it seems like the Maxima's performance has generally fallen off since Nissan moved on from the 5.5G.

As far as CVT goes, I can only speak on my old 05 Murano but, I'm fairly confident that if there were an equivalent 5AT available it would be quicker than with the CVT. (My 12 Accord EX beat up on a current generation Altima 2.5SL while on the way home from work the other day. I'm fairly certain, his CVT ruined if for him.)

cvt trannys do have more drivetrain loss...but iirc 07s dont have cvts...my friend had an 06 i think and it had a 5speed and i would usually barely win in our races from a dig to ~80

Was he using the paddel shifters? The car is slower if u use the paddle shifters, the 10 is definitly faster then the 07 maximas.

There is no proof that the CVT drivetrain loss is greater or less then a conventional tranny I have been working on getting such data but nothing yet has you cant dyno a CVT.

I own a 12 and I have kept up with older model G35 like yours. One being modded had me by 2 cars+/-, and the other stock it was neck to neck. CVT can be a drivers nightmare or best friend, learn how to use it and it'll be your best friend.

I ran 2 new Maximas. 1 happened to be behind me at a light when I was running my buddy with an Accord 6 speed as well. We both put about 5 cars on him easily, and he was definitely going because we played around before that. Obviously he was behind us so it wasn't exactly a fair run. The other time was from a roll and it looked stock and it was basically a dead even run. Not sure how you 'rape' him considering they are low 14 @99-100mph cars stock. Nice runs though. Are you 6MT or 5AT? I forget.

Nice! I am surprised you beat the 2010 Maxima from any speed, especially from a roll. I have seen them run with 2007+ G35's neck and neck from a roll. I am sure it is the driver. Getting the best out of the CVT can take some skill. Over 100MPH they run out of steam. My 09 Murano is only good from a roll. Off the line its a dog.

I agree with Esco regarding the maxima being slower via paddle shifters.
Like sonnick said they are capable of low 14's but I have seen much slower times depending on the driver.

Most 7thgen Maxima's are stock due to the fact there isn't many aftermarket support (talking on actual enthusiast buyers) to please the average. Plus CVT so ppl are like ehh... lol Alot of ppl under estimate the car because others think is a tank going down the street when indeed its only heavier then a 06 Accord 2dr v6 by 200lbs! It being a full size car (its no longer a mid size as the altima took that segment yrs ago). Decent to good driver you can pull a mid to low 14's.

Nontheless, I sometimes miss my TL-S lol..

Here's a crappy vid showing how easily i pull on him... not the best place but we didn't go crazy. And yes, he actually WAS racing. i also raced a modded one and put a couple cars on him too.

And here's a friendly red light run with an 02 maxima that's actually about even with the 10' believe it or not. I had 4 people total in my car, he had 2.

You're auto, right? The way you pulled the Max it seems like you'd be much, much faster. Maybe his CVT had a delay, because you should not be pulling that hard that quickly on him. You're very lightly modded too based on your sig. We'll have to run one of these days. But unless I get tires soon, it's not gonna be from a dig or even 1st gear roll lol.

I was thinking the same thing, cuzz my wifes G can't pull the Max, they run real close to each other to we reach 100. The way he pulled that 10 and 02 its like he was running some type of boost.

Just saw the video on the 2010 Max, yeah that dude wasn't racing or he just suck at driving period!

With your mods there is no way your going to leave bus lengths on a car like that even if it were completely stock...

???????? Those Maximas looked like they were'nt even trying. My sister has a 07 G.
I can tell you that when I was shopping for a new car in 2010,I drove the 2010 Max and to be honest our 03 Maxima SE felt like it had more power and response and it only has a
K & N CAI?

I can assure you guys that both cars were racing. I have other videos that might help you understand how I pulled so hard on those cars. Here's a new Evo MR; I had 2 200lb. Passengers in the car, one was recording. Evo driver was alone. I slowed down early because there was a car infront of me:

Here's an interesting one... My buddy with the same car as me wanted to race. He cheated though. But I still got him

Maybe you got some factory freak putting down GTR power, cuzz with your mods no way are you pulling a 10 or 02 Max like dat. The way you are pulling it seems as if you have 150 or more hp and tons more torque than those cars. My 370 can't even pull no where near like that on the G or the Max.

dgsedan06 - either you have more then what your sig says or you have one hell of a 5spd automatic!

An EVO X MR can do a 1/4 mile @ 13.4 secs with 291hp/300tq AWD

While a G35 5at stock do a 1/4 mile @ 14.6 with 280hp/270tq RWD

These are stock number of course... so with your mods and an additional 400lbs how exactly are you faster then 13.4?

And yes, I do feel that my transmission is great; excellent actually. I only race using "manual" mode and I take it to 7k.

You can squeeze a low 14 out of one as I have in my wife's G auto

I can't seem to find that damn video with the charger. But here's one with a somewhat similar car; a new Camaro SS . This is when my G was bone stock. He said he would put buslengths on me, yet I was less than a couple cars away before we shut it down.

Interesting vids. My dad has a 2009 Max so I'll try and run him to see where I stack up.

Maybe those maximas you went up against need a driver mod

I'll have to run you one of these days. The Camaro spanked you though lol, as expected.

I still feel like the Max had some sort of delay from the CVT. Props for having vids though

^Anytime ... I'm in Long Island on the weekends. PM me whenever u want haha I would also love to race an AT 07+ TL-S. I've raced an 04 base w exhaust and an 05 base stock. No offense to anyone, but both really sucked. I have videos that I probably shoudnt post up since one of them could be a member. I will post up a good one soon; it's a 2010 C300 vs my car with 4 passengers.

^ Yes, I figured with 290hp they would prove troublesome. Maybe with a good driver they are? Who knows. But here is the vid of that Benz. If you listen closely you can hear a delay in my transition into 2nd. I over revved and the car bogged. Still got him though
